The George Hotel and Beach Club

We enjoyed a spacious superior room with a sea view. The decor was a little tired but the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was, in the main, good but at these prices I expect a little more than mediocre sliced white or brown bread. The hotel does enjoy good sea views.

Although expensive we chose to stay at the George Hotel & Beach Cub because it advertised parking & being a beach club. First off the hotel does not have parking despite the Booking.com advert listing it has having parking & putting top of the list of “Most popular facilities”, Parking. This, to me, is misleading advertising and not entirely honest. The hotel fronts onto a narrow one way street so briefly dropping off baggage is problematic as you will hold up traffic. There is a small pay & display car park to the side of the hotel but spaces are limited & it is often full & it only offers short term parking. The most practical parking option is to use the long term car park which is a 7 minute walk away. The hotel defends its self by saying that, at the end of a long list of features, that paid parking is available. Coming after stating that "Parking is Available" twice in prominent positions does not mitigate the misleading nature of the advert. The advert should clearly and only state that paid parking is available. Secondly, if the description “beach club” conjures up images of relaxing on a sun lounger on a beach enjoying a nice cool drink, forget it. Closely look at the hotel pictures & you will see that the beach, such that it is, is very small with no sun beds. Warning signs abound telling of the danger of swimming & not to do it. There is, however, a large very busy terrace full of noisy revelers enjoying drinking the afternoon away on hard chairs. If that’s for you then the George is perfect. A peaceful relaxing place to spend time it was not.

The bed in our was very substandard with two cheap mattresses with a big gap between on a double bad. Very uncomfortable and gave me and my wife back ache. Room was not very clean and the hotel is generally tired and in need of investment. It’s a shame because it’s a brilliant location.

Historic and smart

It didn’t have a lift because it’s an ancient building, but it wasn’t really a problem.

This time our stay was a massive and expensive disappointment

Don't waste your money here, the guest experience does not match the big price tag. We've stayed here many times over many years and got married here. It's always been a pricey hotel but the lovely rooms, ambience and facilities made it worth it. These days, the rooms are run down, the mattress and pillows were lumpy, the breakfast buffet was sad and limited, the overall guest experience very poor. We paid £329 for a very poor night's sleep. When we complained they said they'd upgraded us to the deluxe (watch out if you book any other level if that's the deluxe!) and the receptionist wasn't the slightest bit interested in our feedback.

absence of a lift.Reception staff kindly assisted us in carrying heavy bags to top floor.Our room looked onto a roof so really no view of any sort . Fan not really that adequate in time of intense heat. Window opened only a little but probably because of safety.
