Needed a last minute place to stay in Hitchin. This room was a great choice, with friendly accommodating pub landlord who checked me in and showed me around. The location was convenient, 5 minutes walk from the train station and 10 minutes walk from the centre. The flat is the original over the pub flat used by the landlords family so there is a home from home aspect to it, the bedroom was cosy and homey with a kitchen to cook your own food and large family bathroom.

I was fine with this but including it for a balanced review in case it's important to other people - with the kitchen and shared bathroom there is a slight hostel vibe to the place so set expectations when you're choosing, this is not a hotel with private bathroom etc.

It is good that the pub offers this type of accommodation as there is clearly a shortage in Hitchin. The owner/manager was friendly and helpful, as were his staff. The room was reasonably spacious. The Albert Pub below was a lively place with good food cooked by a proper chef. There is also a very nice Turkish-run café next door, recommend for breakfast.

Although spacious the room was extremely basic, with no hanging space or a table and some dodgy electrical cables running accross the floor. It was quite noisy at night, but that is understandable for a room above a lively pub. However, the bathroom was obviously shared by several people and was far from clean. Also, a communal kitchen was available but this was hazardously dirty, overflowing bins, unwashed plates etc in the sink; the overall vibe was like staying in a shared student house... I think they really need to work on all this and probably close off the kitchen and provide beverage equipment in the room. Access to the room was via series of narrow steps, often being used by smokers and vapers, and car parking is pretty well impossible outside or nearby. It is quite close the station though.
