Beech Cottage with Clun Castle View

Huge cottage, rooms that had been refurbished had been done to a high standard

Outside area needs some attention, had to move a dead bird. Kitchen and bathroom in process of a refurb but perfectly clean and usable. Cottage is not called Clun Castle View look for Beech Cottage!!

The location is lovely and great for walking and exploring. Shropshire is an underrated gem of a location. The beds and bedding in the property are comfy. It's dog friendly. The owner refunded us for the 2 days we decided we couldn't stay in the damp, unfinished property any longer. I have given 1 point for each of those four things.

Unfinished decor April 2024. Photos from the owner only show the areas of the house that have been finished. He described it in communication with us when we contacted him to express our disappointment as 'needing a bit of TLC' and 'not to everyones standard'. The whole house smelt of either damp or stale old smoke. There are damp walls with scuffed and peeling paint, both by the front door, the back door, and the dining room wall. It is an old terrace property and some quirks are expected, but not to this degree. The wall in the dining room was wet internally. There are multiple dehumidifiers throughout the property. The kitchen cupboards are old and damaged (and some are locked). The kitchen is not equipped well enough for a family of four self catering - there are no oven dishes and no oven gloves for example. There is no hoover (the property is pet friendly and we would normally do a quick hoover and a mop before leaving but this wasn't possible). There were stains from a spilt drink on the wall in the lounge. We asked for a 50% discount, which was also requested on our behalf from booking.com to the owner. This was declined. The owner offered us 10% initially and then 20%. We were not able to relax in the home as there were limited facilities to cook properly in the kitchen, and the smell of damp/smoke was pervasive. After much tooing-and fro-ing we were eventually offered a refund on 2 nights if we left the following day which we accepted. No compensation for the time already there was offered, despite the false advertising and its impact on our holiday.

Location was fantastic, waking up to see the castle every morning..Neil, the owner, was a delight to work with, very helpful, genuinely interested that everything was ok and shaving left something at the property he went out of his way to help…internet was strong, water hot, central heating spot on…thanks Neil, a great stay

The only thing I mentioned to Neil was that the kitchen could do with a coffee plunger/French press..that was the only thing..hardly worth mentioning

Set in a lovely tranquil village, close to the amenities, cosy little cottage which is well appointed.

Small back yard/garden.
