MAKAI Surf House

I had a wonderful stay at this lovely hostel in Ahangama. Since it was low season, I had the dorm all to myself — the room and all the common areas are super cosy. It’s the perfect place to relax in the evening, whether in the hammocks or the little outdoor lounge. The family who runs the place is really kind and always happy to help if needed. Having a kitchen with a fridge was definitely a great bonus. The area around the hostel is calm and peaceful, a nice escape from the busy town centre, but still easily accessible on foot. A truly great discovery — highly recommended!

I really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere at Makai, surrounded by lush greenery. It's tucked away from the centre of Ahangama, offering a quiet escape, yet still within walking distance of shops, cafes, and just a short stroll to the beach at the end of the street. Tuk tuks were also easy to catch when needed. I stayed in the standard double room, which was simple but pleasant. With both a fan and AC, it was comfortable for sleeping, though the power was out for a day during my stay (the staff mentioned this happens occasionally in the area). There was filtered water available and plenty of relaxing outdoor spaces to unwind. I also appreciated the notice board with local recommendations and their fantastic guide to the area, it was super helpful for exploring Ahangama and beyond. Staff were also really helpful in arranging my airport transfer, even with a late-night arrival around midnight. Excellent service all around!

Throughout the night a bang would go off maybe 3-4 times. I’m not sure if this was the guests/staff slamming a door or the pipes, but it woke me up each time. Also, as the listing description states they have an on site restaurant and yoga classes, this was my expectation. However unfortunately, these services were not available during my stay (in May) due to the off-season, which wasn’t mentioned at the time of booking. I felt a bit disappointed as these were part of the overall experience I was looking forward to and factored into the price I paid. I completely understand that some services may vary seasonally, but I’d kindly suggest updating the listing or notifying guests in advance, so expectations are aligned.

We had an amazing stay at the Makai surf house! The room was spacious with a private bathroom, felt very clean and was nicely air conditioned. The staff were exceptional, so friendly and helpful. We rented motorbikes and they gave us good guidance on what to do in the area. The location is super peaceful and away from the hustle of Ahangama, so probably best to have a motorbike (although we also walked to the beach & cafes).

Makai Surf House was a great spot in Ahangama. The room was super comfortable and great value for money. Would highly recommend staying here!

The location is perfect — close to the main road and the beach, but far enough to be quiet at night. My room was spacious and had an amazing private balcony facing the jungle. The atmosphere was chill yet stylish. They recently opened a café, which is very cute. The food and drinks are delicious, and the lady who works there is absolutely lovely. There are so many good restaurants close by. The staff was helpful and arranged transportation for me.
