Lovelady Shield Country House Hotel

Excellent breakfast, very pleasant dinner. The hotel is superbly sited for walking, incluuding along the river Nent which runs through the grounds. Don't miss the fascinating Roman fort and settlement at Epiacum, also a site for excellent walks and a friendly cafe. The hotel is a pleasant old building, which seems to have had some refurbishment recently and which may still be under way. There was a problem (see below) with our room, which the friendly staff dealt with by moving us to another much better one.

Although I have now seen that it is mentioned on the hotel's website, we had not noticed that the hotel does not have a licence for alcoholic drinks, as a matter of principle for the owner. It was of no great concern to us, but perhaps guests need more notice of what perhaps nowadays is a little unusual. Unfortunately, we found, during a very cold spell with hard frosts, that the heating in the bathroomwas not working , creating a problem with damp towels. As soon as we raised the matter, we were offered a room with no such problems - the staff were very welcoming and helpful.

House was lovely. Rooms were as to be expected.

No heating in property. They have heaters that's usless. I went for meal to be told everything was freshly made came out still frozen.. when we told the guy he made a joke out of it. His attitude is disgusting. House like this should be 10/10 food. People next to us when we were sitting for evening meal even found a hair in there meal... then he told us it was only ever us 2 complete different tables that's had a issue! Before I booked got told they had a bar.. they don't at all it's alcohol free establishment. They sell cakes that was made last month mold growing on them. 2.50 a can of pop.... Guy with long hair doesn't deserve a job in this lovely place. With the issues sorted I would stay there but on the day I requested refund as i couldnt stay in there with these issues so we had to travel again to find sutable accommodationand nice food as we were by this time starving... still waiting on this to happen

We had book for the wrong day however a staff call Nick help us to change the booking day even when it’s 8pm at night. Appreciate this

Lovely house in the middle of nature! Although the house takes some time to arrive to, it is well worth it! We were welcomed into a very nice and cosy house by very attentive staff. The rooms were nice and cosy. And the scenery is incredible! I would 100% come again if I'm back in the region

No acknowledgement of booking dinner - nobody answered the phone. Staff pleasant but only saw 2 on duty at any time. Hotel is non-alcoholic. That’s ok if it is made a selling point of a hotel of well being. BUT. Really need to get their act together to serve good exciting non-alcoholic drinks. Most places these days sell delicious mocktails in lovely glasses that look inviting. All that was on offer with dinner was absolutely disgusting non-alcoholic wine. They could not even offer any ice with it. Hardly surprising that we were the only ones in the restaurant for dinner, which did not give a very good ambiance! The food was good, but unfortunately, there was a problem with my daughter’s meal. we literally had to go searching the hotel to find someone to do something about it. Such a shame for what could be a really lovely hotel. It will not survive long if they don’t change their ways.

My 3rd stay here, Such a lovely peaceful location and a quiet hotel in scenic surroundings. Staff are so pleasant and everywhere is clean and well maintained, Breakfast is excellent and cooked to order, Highly recommend.
