Atauro Dive Resort

Very friendly and helpful staff, great food, clean rooms and really nice area to just sit and relax or walk around. Location just by the beach.

Food - if 8 people are here there’s enough food for 6. We asked for something more to eat at dinner and were told there is no more the kitchen is closed Great for diving but I’d go elsewhere for dinner

Meals over my three night stay varied quite a lot. Usually quite adequate, but not always (I have no dietary needs) as a number of my fellow guests also commented on. Fruit had to be requested and was very limited. Given that the main feature of the island’s economy is fishing, all of us were surprised that fish was never on the menu. A pity as it was a reasonable expectation. WiFi reception was excellent. Ice cream (extra cost) was superb but ran out of all but one flavour on the last day.

Insect netting on windows in the bungalows did not exist and mosquitoes remained a real issue despite coils and a net over the beds. No hot water was a regular complaint by fellow guests especially after dives and snorkelling. Poor communication about meal times and options compared to other comparable places I’ve stayed at all over the Pacific, SE Asia and Red Sea. A simple sign at least stating times is needed.

We really enjoyed our stay and hope to come back. It was the best diving of our lives.

A nice set of bungalows set in a lovely garden right by the beach, hammocks and sitting areas aplenty if you just want to chill, and of course diving/snorkeling trips arranged too. There are very few places to stay on Atauro, so this is great, and I'd gladly recommend, or even come back someday. Be aware that the extras (food, boat trips, equipment rentals etc) don't come cheap, and that there are island and reef fees, too - but one hopes the money spent here and elsewhere really helps this lovely country and its people (tackling pollution, for example? See comments about the "not so great" below)

Sadly, the beach all along the coast here is full of trash, really shocking. It's not the resort's fault, of course: most comes in on the currents from further afield, and there's too much of it to simply clean up. Still, worth mentioning, as it spoils what would otherwise be paradise. (Note that the diving/snorkeling spots away from the coast are fab, not polluted).
