Langport Arms Hotel

Small bar, restaurant on site, but didn't use as there's a number of other alternatives. seemed quite quiet, despite the proximity to the central high street and through traffic. Central to a small, but vibrant town in the countryside, equidistant from larger towns. Local produce, indie crafts, supermarkets, cafes and amenities. Great walks if you use as a base.

Impersonal service. Just very no frills, and some won't mind this, others will expect a bit more effort and welcome. There's a lot of competition out there, and people who go above and beyond to welcome guests and make them feel safe. I got the feeling that the best years of this grand old place were behind it, and staff weren't prepared, and were 'going through the motions.' Bar was small, smelly, and unwelcoming. Courtyard to rooms was unlit. Room was serviceable but felt very hastily put together, unfinished. Definitely nothing special or luxurious, If it were a characterful pub with good cheer and landlord you can just about get away with it. Such an iconic building should be the toast of the town but it didn't seem very busy.

Friendly staff, good location and a genuine sense of history. Excellent value, too.

I found the pillows and mattress a bit soft, and could not get the shower to run hot water.

Room had a triple reservoir plug in air scent which was the first thing to hit you with its chemical overload, probably to cover up the kind of smell you had in the bar areas. WiFi was totally unusable. Bed mattress was so old the springs just collapsed under you and it's like sleeping on some metal. Floor broken in bathroom, shower held together with duct tape. Carpets were dirty and stained.
