The Retreat

It was nice to swim in the pool

The room was cold and didn't warm up at all while we were there, despite putting on the additional heater, which being metal made loud banging noises while heating up so chose not to have it on while we tried to sleep. The central heating was on a timer but didn't come on at all between 7pm-7.30am. the place was tired and looked grubby. There is so much potential for it to be really lovely but it needs refreshing and renovation. Unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable - the springs dug in all night and the quilt was v thin so we were cold all night. I'm sure I could have asked for an extra blanket but we were tired after a long drive and would have needed to get dressed again to go outside to the main house.

The apartment itself was ok. Nice place to go for walks on a day that’s not raining.

The place was absolutely freezing, the small heater we could control was in the bedroom/living room but was inadequate to warm the apartment. The main heating was controlled by the main house and I don’t think it can have been turned on for a long time. The kitchen/bathroom was so cold it was unbearable, I had my coat on inside. The red tiled floors were so cold they really need more rugs in this place. The pool was cold but not too bad if you swim lengths, we had to get out after 20 minutes because the lights were controlled by the owners (no switches in the room) and they were off so it was really dark. Pool tiles broken and generally shabby as was the apartment. The skirting boards/ radiators in the apartment could of done with a good clean as could the carpet in the main living area.

Quiet location

Was very cold and draughty No oven.

IT’s location was rural and so lovely. Lovely grounds and lovely building. The pool was warm and clean the room was nice and clean and comfortable

The place was quiet and cosy.

The rota for the pool didn't make sense as check in is at 15:00 but our slot was for 14:00 to 16:00. I questioned this and was told another guest hadn't turned up so we could use the pool for as long as we wanted, but after 30 minutes our host came to the pool and said he had mixed up the times and we would have to leave to allow the other guests to have their slot. The pool was also cold.

I liked that there was a kettle and wifi

It was difficult to find as rhere are no signs on the road at either of the gates. The place was shabby, lots of marks and scuffs on the walls, stains on the pillowcases, floor wasnt very clean, rug was stained and shabby so didnt feel I could relax and walk around barefoot. Cobwebs and spiders and loads of nats/bugs buzzing around the lights in the bathroom so didn't use the shower. I booked this place because there was access to a pool which looked so much nicer in the pictures.....it was really cold and looked tired. They did however allow my autistic cousins to visit me to swim.unfortunately as they are quite underweight and vulnerable they couldn't spend long in the water due to the temperature. The grounds and gardens unkempt (grass not cut, broken things lying around entrance to the pool etc) The bed was really uncomfortable and noisy, and I couldn't figure out the TV. Also there is access to a fuse cupboard in the bathroom which seemed strange. I barely slept and got up in the morning and left before 7am to make my 2 hour journey home. It definitely didn't feel like a "retreat" Noticed a For Sale sign so maybe the owners are keen to leave which may explain why they haven't invested in the property and it all just felt very tired. I was staying in the small annex so perhaps the other properties have a different feel.

Quiet location

Arrived Friday and given keys and told this is where you're staying. Used the pool which wasn't in great condition but ok. Saturday morning we went to use the pool again to be told we weren't allowed in because we were supposed to be booking out. I said we were there for 2 nights and it became apparent that they had double booked for Friday night and until that point had not realised. The woman owner thought I was the one night booking. We'd been let in to a property by her husband who must have assumed it was the right one because the other one had a woman staying there. Next followed what can only be described as a farce as the woman accused me of tricking them into giving me the keys and deliberately sleeping in the wrong place. Then further went on to complain that now she had to try and find a cleaner at short notice because someone else would be arriving at 4pm. I was baffled as to how on earth she was spinning her booking mistake into me being out to scam her. We were shown the place that we were supposed to be in and were told we needed to move. The place was a hovel. Cold, smelt of damp and didn't look clean. We decided we'd just leave and book somewhere else. Even though the accommodation was poor, the main reason was the owner's lack of professionalism and the accusations rather than admitting their error. What was intended to be a couple of days peaceful break for my birthday turned into some kind of surreal episode of Fawlty Towers proportions handled so badly that even Basil himself wouldn't have messed up so spectacularly.

Having a swimming pool was awesome, good size apartment, comfortable, spacious, great shower, fridge freezer, good quiet relaxing location.

The bedding wasn’t great, limited and chipped crockery

The style was beautiful and was nice and clean .. was a nice place to stay

Only thing was no curtain up at 1 door opposite bathroom .could benefit with propper cooker and more cutlery ie sharp knife and large spoons for when cooking ..also hard to find could do with sign posting ..

The retreat was amazing very homely ans perfect for what we were looking for

The bed was a little uncomfortable and the pool had a couple of things in however all in all would definitely go again ans enjoyed our stay
