Beautiful Japanese Garden Kagetsu

This place is simply stunning. We spent two fantastic days here. The ryokan is located in a really peaceful area, 20 minutes by foot from Isawaonsen station. The (stone) garden is huge and beautiful with many corners to explore and countless colorful koi that you can feed. Our traditional Japanese room was so comfortable and a whole experience in itself. We enjoyed exquisite Kaiseki dinners and varied breakfast menus with all the best local and seasonal specialties, and the service from all of the staff was on the highest level. The onsen which is open 24 hours is beautiful and relaxing. We had a particular vision of how a stay in a traditional ryokan might be, and our stay here has exceeded all of our expectations. 100% recommended.

Everything about this place is flawless. A top of the line Ryokan experience. This was my first visit to a Ryokan and I couldn't have asked for better. From the start, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The facility feels like living in a museum, and there was a Koi pond in the backyard. Like it couldn't feel more luxurious. I felt so relaxed and found some serious peace at Kagetsu. I loved it. They also appreciated my Japanese, as broken as it is. From the moment I arrived, to the second I checked out, I never stopped smiling. If you can, it is well worth the price.

There was nothing I didn't like about it, but caution. The dinner was awesome, but not for a picky pallet. I apologized profusely for not eating everything, so be aware of that. I was told breakfast would be more suitable, but I had to catch a train to Kyoto early in the morning. I will return in the future to try it though. One thing that did surprise me was the bathroom has motion sensing lights...that was a big surprise for me while washing my hands. So anything that went wrong was because I was way out of my element. Kagetsu is fantastic.

Very nice place to experience the traditional Ryokan. Especially the athmosphere of the place is exceptional. You can definitely feel like you are in the Old Japan with this marvelous archtecture. The staff were extremely kind. The food in the optional dinner experience was perfect. We also liked the traditional style breakfast.

The lady who served us during the dinner experience could not speak English, which made communication difficult. She also rushed the courses—an experience that should normally take around 3 hours was finished in just 1.5 hours. Although the room was almost perfectly clean, we did notice a strand of hair in the bathroom.
