Mountain Shack Homestay

The hosts were wonderful and very kind. The place was very clean. The location was great.

So glad we got to choose Mountain Shack Guesthouse! It’s located less than 2km away from Ella’s hustle and bustle (20 min walk to the centre) in a very relaxing area. The hosts were genuinely kind and they welcomed us with some tea & biscuits, and a big smile! Although there is a considerable slope to get to the guesthouse from the main road they are very happy to help you with the luggage. We rented a Tuk Tuk and they even offered themselves to bring it down and back up again for us! But what we loved the most was the delicious, home-made Sri Lankan dinners and breakfasts during our stay!

The room is very big. Spotless clean. The family was super sweet and helped us with everything straight away. Beautiful surroundings.

Breakfast was nice, the room was clean, the owners were very friendly 😊 Heavy rain caused the electricity go down for a day. It is a common thing in this city.

We didn’t know that it’s located up in the mountains. The city center was 1 km away, but it took a lot of effort to go to Ella, because it was uphill. The taxi charged more because it’s an uphill drive most of the time.

We loved our stay here! The room is small, but clean and comfortable and our bed also had a mosquito net. The bathroom was also clean. Outside next to the door of our room was a little table that felt like our own little terrace, where we enjoyed the lovely breakfast we got at the homestay. Originally we booked 2 nights, but as soon as we arrived we extended our stay with two more nights, and we didn't regret it. We loved that the location was a bit farther out of town, which allows you to escape the super touristy center of Ella, and enjoy the nature and beautiful views without being surrounded by all the touristy stuff. The staff was lovely, super friendly and always around in case you need to ask something.

If you're very sensitive to sound, there are a lot of birds and chipmunks around, that can be a bit noisy.

This is a perfect stay for me because it stays away from all the crowds and noise in the city center. Walking distance is 20 mins from the train station which I think is a decent walk. Beautiful scenery in the way. I only took tuktuk when I was with my luggage. The breakfast is amusing and you can also have dinner for a very reasonable price. The family is very kind and helpful. I would highly recommend to stay here if you come to Ella.
