"Disgusting and unsafe"

1.0

Internet was the only thing that worked in this property.

The property is run down, as everything seems to be broken. Door locks in rooms either don't work or you have to put a padlock on a latch outside the room. The bathroom is not clean and very old (hence, there was no photo of it in the ad), the toilet bowl stinks. Electric sockets are falling out of the wall. The rooms have holes in some corners and the window screens also have holes, so on my first night, a huge spider crawled into the room. When we messaged the host/owner about it and sent him a photo, he did not reply, so I had to catch it myself and release it outside. The whole place is substandard, dirty, and not looked after properly. He said that there is no hot water but he is installing a hot water device for a shower, fiddling with electrics. However, after finding out that I just took the cold shower, he stopped trying to fix it and then blamed me for not reading the conditions about the property. When I stated that I did not feel safe in my room and would not stay for two other nights, he demanded full pay. When I tried to explain and negotiate, offering to meet him half-way, he was rude and dismissive, demanding full pay for three nights, so I payed for one night and left.

"A below average over-priced guesthouse that certainly does not live up to its high rating!"

5.0

- location is quieter than city centre - facilities are decent; towels available, TV (with Netflix), WiFi (although I didn’t use the latter two), and free bike hire was a massive bonus. - the bed was surprisingly comfortable (I think it was a double mattress) - family were nice enough.

I’m going to be as honest as possible and give a fair account of my stay, which does mean given constructive criticism as follows; - in a nutshell, this property is not good value for what you’re paying for. The tourist infrastructure in Tonga is very poor, so you basically don’t have much choice. As a result, they’re getting away with overcharging in a lower-income country. (This is not personally attacking this property because most other properties are insanely priced). There needs to be greater investment from the government and protection for its tourists - otherwise we’re getting financially exploited. It is what it is, right? - I knew it was a red flag when I stepped in the building first time and there were red ants all over the floor. This place needs major refurbishment - repairs are urgently required to the metal pest netting, which is letting in all types of bugs in - mosquitoes, cockroaches (found in the bathroom), woodlice, and spiders. There were even spider webs down the side of my bed. There are many holes that need to be fixed and the windows wouldn’t even shut and the owner had to oil them to close them - just replace them and make them secure without the small gaps that allow such pests to enter so freely. - the bathroom was below hygiene standards one would expect - so old and filthy. Only cold water for the shower. The owner assured me though hot water will come soon - I can’t see how events that will happen in the future will benefit my current stay though?! - Finally, this is friendly advice to the owner - I’m surprised no one in any of reviews has called up you up on this yet but I am afraid I will as warning to other guests - When letting paying guests into your home, this is not an opportunity to promote or express your religious views and try to force them upon others. I did not feel comfortable with this and I know for a fact many others won’t either (I spoke to the other guest who completely agreed with me).

"Very pleasant stay - recommended!"

9.0

Helpful and supportive staff - appreciated 🙏 Very stable internet connection. Free toiletries (including a shaving gel!). Kitchen facilities. Natural daylight in the room. Free use of bicycles. Free use of washing machine. Close to town (15-20 min walk).

The kitchen and bathroom could be a bit cleaner but as for a cabin type of accommodation, that's above standards anyways.

Sifu (the owner) is a very kind and friendly person, he picked me up at the airport and also brought me back the next day. Communication with him was very smooth and easy. My room was clean and had everything I needed.

The kitchen and bathroom could be cleaner, I found cockroaches in the bathroom. Get ready for noisy roosters and a pig living next door :-)
