Unzen Fukudaya

Booked one night onsen experience with Teppanyaki wagyu dinner and traditional Japanese breakfast in May and the experience was just simply wonderful. Fukudaya is a short walk from the small town center. The air was full of sulphur smell which is a pleasant reminder that you are in the middle of a volcano. The Fukudaya is small enough to cater to your needs and yet big enough to offer you both indoor and outdoor hot springs experience. Dinner was great and the chef was masterfully exhibiting his skills at the table and the rightly seared wagyu literally melts in your mouth. The private breakfast experience was equally impressive. I highly recommend this for your onsen experience.

The free parking is behind the hotel . You can unload the luggage right in front of the hotel . The hotel is a 10 min walk from the entrance of the Unzen Hell . The room is huge with a sofa area and an elevated platform for the beds . Only one pillow is supplied though . It would be better if two pillows are supplied . Wifi is fast . The onsens are in two different buildings . The dinner is one of the best kaiseiki dinners we have ever eaten with A5 Nagasaki beef , cheese fondue , live abalone cooked in a small pot . Breakfast is Japanese style . Stay here for the dinner.

Fukudaya is located about 10 minutes walk from the main onsen street. But the Tourists Information Center is right across the road. It is a historical building with an addition of new wing building. The reception staff speak a little English which is already very helpful. The only one elevator is a bit small and guests may have to wait for a while. Our room is big by Japanese standard, though a bit dated. The thermostat only provides on and off option, you can not set the temperature, so you have to turn on and off to make the room more comfortable. The hotel provides a free welcome drink at the bar on the top floor of the new wing. The bar equipped with a juke box providing old songs. The outdoor public onsen is located on the same floor, with a nice view of surrounding landscape. The only restaurant is also located in the new wing. Both the dinner and breakfast is very nice, especially the abalone, the mini fondue and the sushi. The family onsen is a really exceptional place where the onsen water has a strong sulphuric smell. So one can deduce that the onsen water is real. In fact in Unzen you can see hot spring and smoke nearly everywhere.

Staff were so friendly and helpful, really helped make the stay special. Lady who waited at table for dinner was delightful and taught the proper way to eat the keiseki meal, which was the best we've enjoyed in Japan. Guy at front desk even came out to help load our luggage onto bus. Room was spacious and well equipped. Free juke box in the cafe!

The staffs are very friendly. We arrive late evening and our rooms are ready waiting for us. The dinner and breakfast was great.
