"Cosy, family-feel stay in the heart of Nuungwe forest"

10.0

I had the best stay at Nziza Ecolodge. The place has a family feel to it, and the staff were so lovely and did everything they could to help me plan my travel around Nyungwe. The lodge is 45 mins from Nyungwe forest reception which was the perfect location for the chimpanzee trekking when it starts so early. The bed was wonderfully comfortable, with pristine towels and bedding. As everyone else says, I also have to also recommend the Napolitana pasta - a delicious treat! Thank you so much to the whole team ☺️

"Good accommodation for upscale hikers."

8.0

Facilities were really good, and we especially enjoyed the warm shower after a soaking hike ant the very comfortable beds. The food is excellent and comes in large portions.

WiFi (very fast - Star-Link) is only available in the lobby are and the food is relatively expensive.

"Expensive for what you get"

5.0

It's right at the entrance of the Nyungwe park

This place is far from "eco" as it's advertised. It could have amazing potential but it gives the feeling of being run down (sad ilumination, lonely sad souvenir shop, dusty...) Staff are not very friendly or helpful, often not able to solve basic problems. The manager is arrogant and intrusive. One of the staff broke one of my bottles of wine and the manager's answer was "ooops, things happen". Minimum an apology but compesation is what is expected. Food is expensive for what you get. The "ham" and "saugages" offered for breakfast are not suitable for human comsuption, do not order those items. Last time I was there, they didn't have coffee (in a coffee country!!!). They should make a simple menu with food from the area (and become eco for real). Overall, expensive for what the customer gets.

"Passable"

Unfortunately our room was directly located above the campfire and was full of smoke which made it impossible to stay in the room in the evenings. We did mention it to the staff but nothing did change.

"Bad"

Nothing and it was such a bad experience to stay there!

Everything, especially the way the staff and owner treated the guests. No value for money in that place!

"Might be worth the view, but not worth the cost!"

2.0

The views are spectacular, looking over the forest. The air is cool and clean. The surrounding areas are friendly. It is worth visiting this part of Rwanda. There were some nice places to sit and a campfire. The breakfast was good.

We arrived in the evening after booking through booking.com, which showed only a few rooms to be available. Because of this, we booked the tents for camping, as the images looked comfortable enough, but it was very expensive. When we arrived, we were surprised by how quiet it was. Hardly any of the cabins had been booked. During the check-in process, the manager handed us a key to a cabin and told us we could use the bathroom as we wished. We went to take a look at our tents and were disappointed. The canvas tents themselves are quite old and don't seem to have been adequately maintained, indicated by the smell. Inside, there are two beds, a stool, a side table with a re-filled bottle of water, and a plug for charging. There is a wire coming from the back of the tent -- facing the most spectacular views but unable to be opened -- that provides light inside. Unfortunately, some of the duvets were not covered with any sheets. When staying in a lodge this is somewhat off putting. Moreover, we feel we could have been provided with sealed bottle water upon arrival. What was most surprising was being given the key to an available room -- with two beds not being used -- to use the bathroom facilities. We spent almost $200 on the tents (!) and suddenly this room is available but, despite asking, we were not allowed to sleep in it. The bathroom in the room had some plumbing issues. It seems they are trying to build some bathroom and shower facilities for campers but they did not look appealing, as the photo indicates. The dinner also subpar, with a menu consisting of a huge variety of dishes from across the world, rather than focussing on local specialities. We ordered brouchettes and fries to keep it simple, they were dry and took a long time to arrive. Some members of staff lit a fire for us to sit around and eat the dinner. Large logs of unpleasant smelling wood was burnt. Despite the warmth, the clothes worn that day smelt of the smoke for a long time after.
