Swan, Thatcham by Marston's Inns

The rooms are in a different building from the pub. Old but relatively clean. They were having water problems which was difficult for showering etc, The breakfast hours were limited so we missed out as the place was all locked up when we went to inquire. Staff member was fairly curt and quite rude. They need more staff and a more relaxed attitude with guests. Supper food was acceptable but steak was tough. It’s basically a pub with rooms attached. Would not stay there again.

Breakfast and dinner was really lovely presented well. Staff very friendly and so helpful.The location was just right for us as the party was just a walk away.

Unfortunately I feel the rooms could do with an update. The bath was too high which was difficult to climb into to use the shower. It was a bit tight to walk around the bed to the bathroom.

Our stay on Monday confirmed our impression from four days earlier that the Swan's rooms badly need attention. This time, the bedside table had all four legs, the night light cover was not hanging by a thread and, thankfully, the taps shut off the bathwater but other aspects were the same. The wooden front door was equally rotted, caulk in the bathroom needed replacement and linen had a hole. For some unaccountable reason, the room had such a bright green night light that it was hard to fall asleep. As before, online check-out failed for me and at least one customer. The food on both days was fine and your staff are wonderful. Charlie and Haley were as nice and helpful as Ben was on Thursday. You are lucky to have such dedicated and customer-friendly people. They, and the people who stay with you, should not have to deal with such abysmal maintenance. I don't post bad reviews but I'm making an exception this time due to the lack of response to my earlier feedback about Thursday's room. Don't hold your breath for improvements!

Very noisy. Rooms not sound-proofed. You could hear the train level-crossing barriers and trains all the time.

Good location for me.

Had continental breakfast. No croissants or other pastries was a blow. Restaurant dinner ok but pretty basic.

Comfortable bed. Clean bathroom.

Found the room a bit small. They couldn't find our room key and we were kept waiting for about 20mins.

This was a great pub stopover. Great staff, good pub food. Nice atmosphere for a lone traveller, as clearly popular with locals. Breakfast ample and simply good.

Liked it all.
