As a kid from a working-class family, growing up in Buena Park in the 1990s, staying at the Disneyland Hotel was a dream akin to going to the moon: fantastical and impossible! While the price of this Hotel will be enough to deter most budget-conscious visitors, I can honestly say that setting aside extra cash for a few months to stay in the Disneyland hotel is absolutely worth it! My mother used to say, “Staying at the Disneyland hotel is for rich people, and we will never be able to do that!”. Well, I have that kind of money now, so TAKE THAT, MOM!
Vibe / Atmosphere:
From the moment you arrive, the Disneyland charm is on full display. The grounds are immaculately kept, and the entrance to the hotel is shaded with palm trees. The décor throughout has a ’60s retro vibe. Then once I entered, I was impressed with the cleanliness and charm, both professional and welcoming at the same time. The decoration is, above all, cleanly designed, and balanced perfectly between “garden” and “concrete”.
Service / Staff:
At the time I visited, everything was so streamlined that I didn’t have to talk to a single representative to check in! From the Disney App, I was checked in before I even arrived, and my room key was built into the app (and made a delightful magic woosh sound when it opened the door). However, when we did interact with staff at the gift shop and convenience store, they were genuinely interested in our plans while staying at the hotel. And even gave us some relevant tips for visiting during the Halloween rush season. I would have more to say on this, but we simply didn’t need the assistance of the staff much at all! The app automates so many features of your stay that it is easy to be self-sufficient throughout your time here.
Cleanliness / Comfort:
There is a common theme among reviews I have read that this is an older hotel. And while that is true, the rooms have been refurbished in the last decade or so. And they are kept incredibly clean. Unlike many hotels in the area, these rooms do not appear to show their age nearly as much. There are minor noticeable things like the grouting and size of the tubs that indeed hint at this being built a long time ago in an economy far away, but nothing that detracted from the experience for me personally. The room we stayed in had an excellent view overlooking the front of the hotel, and the wall-to-wall window was an incredible way to let the morning sun into the room. The beds were very comfortable, and the chairs were as well. I rarely use hotel furniture other than the bed, but I was surprised to say I spent a good amount of time just lounging in the chair, looking out the window at the park.
Food / Amenities (if applicable):
The amenities in the room are the standard that one would expect in any hotel of this caliber (hairdryer, mini-fridge, TV, etc). There were also robes provided, which were just delightful, and of course had the Disney Logo on them.
What You Did (activities / duration / standout moments):
We stayed at this hotel for four nights. The short walk to the parks, the access to restaurants, the convenience of shops in the lobby, and the overall attentiveness of the staff (not to mention the convenience of the app) made our stay simply wonderful. Each day blends into the next, and we left all of our time and attention to navigating the parks. We did visit the Disneyland Park for three out of the four days, and one evening at the Oogie Boogie Halloween party in California Adventure. That is a truly STANDOUT event, and well worth the special ticket price. Oogie Boogie Bash was the highlight of our stay, to be sure! We did not use the pool during our stay, but I have used it in a previous stay, and it is lovely. While we didn’t spend much time in the room itself, the grounds of the hotel kept the “Disney magic” experience alive for us from the Park to the Room.
Pros & Cons
Pros: There are MANY pros to staying at this hotel; however, I must say that the unequivocal winner is the proximity to the Disney Property. If you stay at the hotel, you might also get early entry to the park on select days. The security line to get into Downtown Disney is relatively shorter (not always SHORT in the strictest sense) but short-ER than the main security entrance from the public street. The option to take the Mono-Rail from inside the park to the Downtown Disney stop, which is a quarter-mile stroll to your hotel from there, is convenience worth the extra cash? And if you have already used your ticket once that day, you can jump on the monorail and ride it straight into the park, no muss, no fuss. That is a pretty impressive convenience, in my opinion.
Cons: For me personally, the value is worth every penny. That said, for many people, the main con here will be the price point (which can get as high as $1000 a night for a standard room during peak seasons). For many visitors on a budget, the price is simply cost-prohibitive. That is the main con of staying at this hotel. And to a lesser degree, having to walk all the way through the Downtown Disney property (especially in crowded hours) can be an extra distance you may not want to do after a long day of waiting in lines to get on rides.
Tips for Future Travelers (optional):
If you are willing to pay the extra money and you can afford it, I highly recommend doing so! That established, even if you have a large budget for your stay, you should keep in mind that food is not included anywhere on the property. The prices of meals can add up, especially if you are staying for three or more days, as we did. My recommendation is to budget for about $100 a day per person if you plan to eat three meals a day (or do your wallet a favor and buy some groceries you can fit in the mini-fridge). I also, of course, recommend downloading the app well in advance of your trip, because you will HAVE to use it for virtually everything.
Most memorable feeling or moment:
The most enrapturing and honest-to-gods deal maker for me is the Headboards! The headboards may seem like a minor stylistic addition to some, but the “goodnight kiss” feature that lights up and plays wish upon a star is just the Disney Magic special touch that makes staying at this hotel worth it. Playing that thing each night for my partner before bed was the absolute highlight of my trip!
