Amara Cay Resort

This hotel is beautiful if a bit small. The rooms and accommodations are nice. But the utter ineptitude, hostility, malice, and blatant lies of the staff make this place one of the worst experiences I’ve had with a vacation stay. The issue began when I checked in and asked if I could extend my stay by one day and asked to stay in my same room. I was told yes, and that they could arrange me not switching rooms. I went to think about the extension before coming back in a bit and asking to confirm. At this point I was told I would need to switch rooms because they had booked someone into the room. I also had been promised a later checkout at 12 but then the agent said she had not promised me and I needed to call in the morning to confirm that instead. I was also told the new room would be ready no later than 1 pm for me. I called in the morning and was told once again there was someone the room after and I had to leave the room at 11. I had a meeting at that time that I needed to take in the public lobby because I couldn’t stay in my room. I then went to the tiki bar for lunch to wait for 1 so I could switch rooms and go to the beach. When I went to the front desk around 130 I was told that the room wasn’t ready. The manager then told me that they could PUT ME BACK IN MY ORIGINAL ROOM INSTEAD. At this point I was incredibly stressed out and frustrated and had clearly been lied to by both the agent the night before and the agent in the morning telling me there was someone booked into my room after me. There was not, and waking up early, switching rooms, and losing hours (of this one rare vacation day I haven’t had in so long) had not been needed at all. The housekeeper confirmed they had never been told to prioritize cleaning the new room I was switching into, as well. I was very upset, and the manager said we could discuss compensation, but did not actually offer me anything. I did not want to talk further and went to my room to change and go to the beach. When I came back in, the agent said the manager was busy but had offered $50 “toward food and beverage” (this is precisely what she said. I said this wasn’t acceptable. The manager came out and I basically had to say over and over again that it wasn’t acceptable and I shouldn’t have to push for compensation which I had needed to do even to get $50 offered in the first place. She offered another $50, I also said this wasn’t acceptable. At this point, she offered me 30% off the room rate. This was clearly offered in addition to the previous offer. I said that was fine and went to dinner. When checking out this morning, the agent confirmed the $100 credit but not the 30% off room rate. The new manager on duty took a very hostile tone as she said the $100 was the 30% off. (Never mind $100 is not even close to a third off the room price.) She called the previous manager at my insistence, who in a raised voice and hostile manner basically called me a liar and denied ever saying that she offered this to me. During my many trips to the front desk, I heard several other guests raise issues with the hot water, with broken facilities in the room, with air conditioning, etc. They were all treated dismissively and their issues left unsolved and uncompensated. This hotel pretends to be a high class resort that offers a luxury experience, but the staff has nothing but contempt for its guests and actively lies to them. I would highly recommend taking your business elsewhere.

Exceptional staff. Views are beautiful. Tiki bar and food service and quality is exceptional. Can’t say enough positive about this beautiful resort.

All the help was great! Damian in the bar made the stay even better

The heated pool, comfy bed.

Mold in shower, low toilet and toilet seat rusting and kept falling when men used it.

Room: the attendant were on the ball. Got me fresh towels. Restaurant: very good, even with the amount of people, they took care our my family very well. Great service! And the check in: Awesome, felt welcome and supper nice and check out, because our breakfast took a little longer than expected, they let us stay in the room until we finished. Awesome staff!

Coolers in the pool, I can see you would require canned, I came prepared. And the table were small. It was annoying not to be able to bring our drinks to the pool, even when they were serving the same drink at the bar. Seem like they just wanted to take money.

Everything was awesome except for the policy no coolers in the pool area.

Everything else was OK
