Tired hotel with disengaged staff. Checked in by Joe who had no interest in welcoming us to the hotel, didn’t offer to help us up the two flights rickety stairs but did hand us a “welcome letter” which saved him having to talk to customers. He then quickly disappeared to whatever we had interrupted by arriving... Room 7 in the main building was tired with basic facilities. The bathroom needs replacing with no shower and a broken hand held shower which cannot be operated separately from the bath. Lesley at breakfast was a star whoever and delivered an outstanding customer experience.

"Beautiful setting, but lacks facilities and loud"

8.0

Very lovely setting and building, scenic. Although aware it is a older building it would of been nice to have a better quality of facilities, as the shower wasn’t the best and the bath tub was rather small. Another negative to our stay was the fact that it was really loud at all times of the day, after we checked in (around 3pm) we entered our room and could hear the whole conversation of two women upstairs then around 2am in the morning hear two men talking, this was not due to their level of noise as it was clear they were talking not shouting. It’s a shame for the facilities and the noise as this is a beautifully present hotel in a lovely setting and very quirky, unfortunately would not stay again due to reasons stated.

"Adequate"

6.0

This is a great location and beautiful building. Room was comfortable although bizarrely the television was at right angles to the bed (room 18). They had unfortunately had an issue with the boiler in the main house and there wasn't any hot water. Their answer to that was to provide a room for showering in another block. This was a walk away and although not far it happened to be a freezing cold morning and was not really a comfortable experience. I'm not sure whether the water was only tepid in the alternate bathroom because of the issues with the boiler or because the temperature was kept low because it was a disability room but the temperature can only be described as adequate. They did tell us there was a problem and left a bottle of wine in our room as compensation. We arrived after dark and would have appreciated either better lighting or better signage to get to reception. The drive is also very badly potholed. You need to have your wits about you not to damage the suspension - I'm glad we use our sports car this particular weekend as I'm almost sure we would have damaged the skirts. All in all not a bad stay but they need to sort out the drive/lighting/signage and provide bathrobes if guests need to be walking around the grounds to get a shower Mercure have a price matching policy. Be aware they will then add service charges etc. I paid almost £30 cheaper on Hotels.com

"What a disaster!"

4.0

We had lots of problems - flooding and service mainly. Spent an hour going through the issues with a lovely duty manager who promised the hotel manager would be in touch. Provided all my contact details but no one ever contacted me. I emailed the hotel after a week or so of not hearing anything and have never received a reply. It could be do great and the closest hotel to my daughter so gutted they don’t value their guests more.

"Lovely hotel, young staff let it down"

8.0

Hotel and setting is beautiful, but the staff at night are very young and not very attentive, the bar is often unmanned and we had to ask at reception for someone to serve us. The food was beautifully cooked but it was served without cutlery, by the time we found someone to bring some and we had received it our food was cold. Breakfast staff were amazing and friendly, very attentive.
