Macdonald Leeming House

Overall lovely stay! Very peaceful and relaxing. We had a balcony with the best view of the lake! Amazing! The grounds were lovely also. The man at the desk was very lovely, friendly and helpful. However, they desperately need poo bag bins! It’s a great hotel for dogs and there were no restrictions, however there were no bins at all to put the poo bags which was very annoying. But apart from that no issues.

Overall the stay was good. The location & setting was amazing. The staff were all very friendly and professional. The Reception staff were excellent and very accomodating. The building is looking at bit tired in places and would benefit from some upgrades especially externally. The evening meal was good although portion sizes were a bit questionable given the prices charged. The wine on offer also was a little disappointing. Breakfast wasnt the standard i was expecting.

I recently stayed with my partner for a weekend get away. From the receptionist showing us to our room ,to magic and Rosie in the restaurant and bar and the lovely Monica on breakfast we had an amazing 3 nights stay , the staff were wonderful, The food was also excellent in all in all apart from the desert on our first night the ginger and rhubarb tart for £16.50 was a little bit disappointing. We had days out at the nearby lowther castle and gardens and aira force waterfalls these were great additions to a wonderfull stay . Room 39 was comfortable and spacious with great views Overlooking the lake. Thankyou all we can't wait to return We highly recommend Regards Dan and emma

On arriving I asked if they had bar meals answer yes. Went into empty bar ignored for very many minutes while girl poured water and chatted to colleague gave up . Went to restaurant fine dining menu offered. Asked for bar meal menu That did not go down well. Wine was brought and half a glass of water. Food was excellent. Requested more wine and water twice from reluctant staff! I’m still waiting for the water! The restaurant was not busy.

Beautiful location with views of Ullswater

The staff were excellent. The room was spacious, comfortable and clean. The quality of the food was exceptionally good. Would happily recommend this hotel.

Beautiful location right on Ullswater with lovely grounds leading down to a little beach. I stayed in May 2023, so this is a delayed review but the memories of this place are still fresh in my mind. The house is charming with French Creole architecture that seems like it belongs in New Orleans rather than in England. The interior decor is more Victorian in style. The room was standard but nothing to dislike. I had dinner in the library and breakfast in the main restaurant and both meals were delightful. Service is a bit slow, but perhaps it is the kind of place where you shouldn’t be in a rush… anyway, staff are helpful and friendly. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Had a lovely stay at the Hotel. Staff were very helpful especially Deb on reception who was great, nothing was too much trouble. The hotel room was very nice, with a wonderful view. Also a great breakfast! I agree with other comments that the hotel needs some TLC which is why I gave it a 4 star but overall a lovely stay. Thankyou

We chose to spoil ourselves with a night at MacDonald Leeming House after a 5 hour drive from home. We arrived a little early but received a lovely, warm welcome from the manager who was so helpful throughout our stay. Our room was well equipped with a lovely bathroom and very comfortable bed. Dinner was delicious (artichoke soup, ham hock terrine, halibut and belly pork) and all beautifully cooked but expensive at £50 per head for 2 courses plus service charge plus drinks (fantastic Chilean merlot at only £31 a bottle). Breakfast was a mixed bag: firstly, all the hot food bar the full English or vegan or porridge had a supplement of £6 per head which seemed an unnecessary detail given the cost of the stay. Further, there was evidence of cost cutting: no freshly squeezed or quality orange juice, only 1 type of fresh fruit (delicious watermelon) no home made or quality jams or marmalade, basic, thin sliced bread for the toast. These are not what you would expect from an hotel of this quality. Having said that the food produced by the chefs, both at dinner and breakfast, was outstanding, as was the coffee. The service was efficient and the 3 serving staff were absolutely delightful with one, unfortunate incident when we asked for a reduced vegan breakfast to which the 4th waitress said "so, not really a breakfast then" in a curt tone. This tart response was most unwelcome. The lovely manager could not have been more apologetic and charming when we told him on checking out. A beautiful building in a stunning location marred by the comments above.

Beautiful location right on the lake but no amenities like paddle boards or row boats.
