The Salthouse Hotel

We just had a 2 night short break in The Salthouse, Ballycastle which was our 4th stay here. The hotel is spotless and clean, the staff are very friendly, and the food is good. However, the hotel seems to be too warm. Our room was quite uncomfortable during the night, even with radiator off, window open and Dyson cooler on, meaning little sleep. The breakfast room was also very warm and needed an injection of fresh air. Very uncomfortable to sit it. For dinner, we ate at both the hotel restaurants, the first had a good fine dining menu. However, some staff sprayed the tables when cleaning them, while people were still eating at nearby tables, which sent some spray drifting towards our table, and an unpleasant taste in our mouths. Why don't they spray into the cloth first before wiping table? We also ate in the hotel's The Lookout more Italian style restaurant. Simpler menu more suitable to kids. Have to say the staff here were not very attentive, and at times none of them were to be seen! Food was ok. One other major point, is that it is not easy to turn out of the road the hotel is on to the Glenshesk Road. It is difficult to see approaching travel on either side and is quite dangerous. Surely a mirror could be positioned here to make things easier? However, overall a decent place to stay and we will be back. PS the breakfast fry could be better!

The only observation is that there was no shower cap in the bathrooms.

The hotel is really worth a stay, though a few things could be improved. I think that the suits could have a bit more equipment or kitchen utensils, like plates/ forks and napkins.

We thoroughly enjoyed our mid-week break in The Salthouse. It is beautifully appointed with an outlook over Ballycastle and the ocean, although the hotel standard rooms do not not have a sea view. But the room itself was large, spotless and very tastefully decorated. Dinner in the restaurant on our first evening suffered from a staffing issue and service was extremely slow. Having said that the food itself, when it came, was delicious. We ate in The Outlook on our second evening. It would have been helpful if we had been forewarned that they were catering for a hen party of around 40 that evening. However this did not appear to affect the service, just the noise level, and the meal was very good value with their mid-week half price menu. I would say however that the portions are over-generous and about 2/3 of the helpings would be more than sufficient. Breakfasts were delightful too.

Really poor stay at The Salthouse. En-suite of a really cheap, poor standard. The door didn't close if you had a towel on the radiator, we arrived to door ajar due to towels too.Rooms VERY basic and lacking style. Our view was building work which we were not aware was ongoing. Cheap bedroom furniture, some of which was warped from water. The water in our room was in a large bottle without a top on it, l've never ever seen a refillable bottle of water in any hotel room, never mind without a lid. Had a meal in restaurant which was of a very good standard, we both had steak and it was cooked perfectly to our request. The two young ladies serving us were both excellent and the best thing about our stay. I would never stay here again. The most disappointing and overpriced place ever! Drive on is best advice I could give you!

We came last minute and we enjoyed our stay. The staff were friendly and professional. The room was well decorated and very spacious. The Look out served delicious food. Breakfast was lovely also. Would definitely stay again.
