We initially booked ANA Crowne Plaza for the pool. Given that we were visiting Japan during summer we thought our kids would enjoy the chance to cool down. Using the pool costs an additional AUS $30 and was poorly maintained- rust and broken tiles. They did not want to stay in the pool long and were left really disappointed. My husband booked the more traditional Japanese style rooms and it was a terrible mistake. The hallway on the third floor smelt terrible (combination of old carpet and cigarette smoke). The room itself also had a stale, old smell. We paid a hefty amount of money to stay in a run down apartment. They really should offer a heavily discounted price if they continue to offer such poor quality rooms. If booking here ensure you opt for the renovated floors. Positives: friendly staff, spacious room, free shuttle bus back to station, always an English speaking staff available.

The location is this hotel is a bit out of the way but still walkable to restaurants and shops within 10 minutes walk. When we walked into the hotel we thought we were in an old 80s russian hotel. V depressing atmosphere in the lobby that was vast. Gentlemen at reception were not friendly one bit, not one smile was exchanged. The staff in the bar were borderline rude, they obviously didn't want us there and made it quite clear by sitting us at a dirty table when there was nobody in there. We got upgraded to a room facing the castle. The room was fine and clean. It wasn't the height of luxury but it was nice enough but I think we got one of their refurbished rooms. I wouldn't stay there as we were not made to feel welcome for the 4 nights we spent there.

Excellent 4 star hotel about 10 minutes from station. Amazing staff so attentive friendly and helpful. Reception great welcome and informative. Room was lovely and bigger than most in Japan. Breakfast excellent so much choice omelettes boiled egg fried egg cereal fresh fruit salmon freshly squeezed orange machine pastries bread to toast and Asian choice.

The staff was very attentive and the lobby was huge. I loved the size of our rooms very western size. The hotel rooms just need an update.

1. Location is good 2. All staff speaks good English 3. Comfy bed 4. We like the diorama (Nijo Castle model) in the lobby!

1. Breakfast: they only provided Kraft jam. It was quite disappointing for people like us who like real fruit jam sandwich for breakfast. 2. The hotel provided shampoo, hair conditioner, body wash, but not body lotion. 3. We couldn't stand the low-quality thin-and-weak-fiber toilet paper.

The worst hotel I stayed at with small dusty, moldy rooms, a pricey restaurant (cafe?) with cold food and a semi-pool with 2 lanes, with broken machines and loud members walking around. Terrible customer service as the manager somehow looked dustier than the rooms, slower than room service, and less responsive than a broken call bell. The location seems to be good on the map but soon you discover that you will have to walk to the downtown area on foot a lot, and the nearby train station is a minor transit line.

The hotel is next to the castle so great. But it’s a rundown part of town. And out of the way for Kyoto’s other attractions. But the real problem is the rooms are old and dust mite ridden. The place is an itchy mess if you are sensitive to these critters occupying your bedding.
