"Work Contract, good overall experience!"

8.0

Stayed at this location for a work assignment for about 3 months, overall a good experience! Way better than the location at pleasant hill, staff is friendly, the rooms are clean and updated/renovated, neighbors not too loud, the only thing bad I could say is the stovetop takes a long time to heat up and often times there was no one at the front desk when I needed help I would stay here again if i am working in this area 😃

"Prejudice, Bias, and No Compassion for Autism"

2.0

I’m currently staying here with my small family, while I’m on a travel nursing assignment. We’ve been singled out and treated with open bias by the manager, Mary Hawkyard. The first issue was when Mary told us to “keep our shoes in the room.” We only take them off and leave them outside briefly because we don’t wear shoes inside the room. We never just leave them out. She also stopped me and said that I was the only person registered to the room and that everyone had to be listed, which is completely untrue. Only my husband needed to show ID and register, which he did the day we moved in. Our children are minors and don’t need to be listed individually. Yet, for some reason, she decided to make an issue of it. I felt like because we’re Black, we got singled out and questioned like we don’t belong here. Almost as if we were trying to sneak in extra guests. Another disturbing incident happened late in the morning when staff came banging on our door, waking up my entire family, because they assumed a car parked illegally belonged to us. We were still asleep because I work overnight shifts. They said it was a Honda. We drive a Kia Sorento and a Nissan Altima. Both vehicles are parked legally in handicapped spaces with our placards properly displayed. They must have seen a Black person get out of the Honda and, of course, decided to lump us all together. The final straw was already laid when Mary came to our room and demanded that we move to another room, because she personally didn’t want to hear my toddlers running around above the lobby. Our room isn’t even above any other guest room, only the lobby. When I calmly explained that moving us above a guest didn’t make sense, she repeatedly cut me off mid-sentence and talked over me. When I pointed that out, she gave a quick apology but continued doing the same thing. One of my children is autistic. She is nonverbal, nonviolent, and often stims quietly, which is her way of self-soothing and expressing herself. She isn’t loud or disruptive, but it’s clear this hotel is not special-needs friendly. They seem to respect dogs more than they respect a child with autism. That reality has been incredibly hurtful to witness as a mother. A couple of times my kids have fallen off of the bed or chair but these were spaced out occasions. To make matters worse, the room she wanted to move us to was extremely far away from the elevator, which would make it very difficult to access especially with an autistic child who struggles with long walks and changes in environment, particularly at night. It was unreasonable and inconsiderate, and it showed a complete lack of empathy or understanding for our situation. The guests directly above us are extremely loud, yet we’ve never complained once. We intentionally chose to stay in a room above the lobby so that we wouldn’t risk disturbing other guests. Still, we’re the ones being labeled as noisy and problematic, while others are given a free pass. I wonder why. Mary told me I had to contact guest relations to escalate to a district manager. Knowing that would take some time, she went into our account and falsely noted that there had been “several complaints” and “several attempts” to accommodate us, which is absolutely untrue. It was her way of covering herself so that by the time I did call, it would look better on her end. She even refused to give me her district manager’s name, Dustin Martin, until I asked her if withholding it was illegal. I eventually spoke with a guest relations supervisor named Scarlett, who was also no help. She told me that since the hotel “tried to accommodate” us and there were “noise complaints,” I was at fault and had to leave if that’s what the manager decided. Meanwhile, there’s a WHITE family right across from us with two small kids, a huge dog, and a large metal cage that rattles constantly they’ve never been asked to move. They get understanding and leniency, while we get warnings, lies, and eviction threats. I used to think San Ramon was a welcoming, safe area, but this experience showed me that it’s no different from any other “nice” area that still practices quiet prejudice. Mary Hawkyard, Extended Stay America, and San Ramon have made it clear that families like mine especially those with special-needs children aren’t truly welcome here.
