"Not what we had hoped for"

6.0

After a long overland tour from Cape Town we arrived in Victoria Falls. We planned a couple of rest days here before heading back to game parks in South Africa. Instead of staying in town we thought a couple of nights on the the river would be nice. That was the theory but perhaps it was flawed. The Zambezi River is beautiful and our sunset cruise was a lovely memorable evening. Unfortunately the hotel was disappointing. Our room was neat and tidy, with a bath and a shower with good water pressure and temperature, and a comfortable queen sized bed. However it was quite small and devoid of any touches of character or African charm. Aside from the mosquito nets we could have been in a city hotel anywhere in the world. The reception staff were helpful and pleasant, but breakfast wait staff were not, apart from a lovely woman managing the egg station. We had to work very hard to get anyone's attention for tea and coffee, and while the restaurant was not busy the tables were not re set, and we had to gather the necessary cutlery etc from other tables. Dinner was also a comedy of errors, and not up to the standard of food available in the town. Such a shame because the location on the river is lovely. Maybe we had been spoilt at previous desert camps and game lodges on our trip. The change generally into Zimbabwe was a downward one. Breakfast did provide some entertainment with cheeky monkeys being held at bay by staff with slingshots, and resident warthogs scavenging on the lawns for their breakfast. The river location is nice but a distance form town. There is a free shuttle but if your plans don't line up with the limited schedule (every two hours) you need to organise your own transport which seemed expensive to us. Overall we were disappointed with our time here after opting to pay extra money ($350 USD per night) for what we assumed would be a significant upgrade to our in town accommodation at the end of our tour.

"I would not stay here again."

3.0

Room was ok. that's all.

For what we were paying ($500 per night), it was very average. Food was okay in the evening but there was no wine list available. Breakfast was the worst of our four week stay in southern Africa - and this place cost much more than most. Room was fine but I could have been in LA or Sydney. Staff were indifferent with only a few exceptions.

"Stunning location and grounds, right on the Zambezi River. Hard to fault!"

10.0

Amazing location, right on the Zambezi river. Hippos and elephants wander onto the grounds to graze from about 10pm some nights. Staff all very friendly and accomodating, food was pretty much all delicious and lots of vegetarian options. This was the only place we stayed in Zimbabwe and drinks were quite expensive compared to South Africa where we had been previously. But honestly that is a very minor gripe, because the place is just so beautiful. We would stay there again in a heartbeat, and recommend it to anyone.

"Amazing accommodation"

8.0

This was an amazing accommodation and in a lovely quiet location alongside the Zambezi river. The staff were very helpful and polite and there was wonderful entertainment each evening by the local people. The buffet meals were very nice and had lots of choice. Hippos wander into the grounds at night which was a wonderful bonus. Vic Falls was close by where we had a wonderful day and getting wet is all part of the experience. The only comment I would make is that they ran out of the drinks we were having on the second night and the wine was very expensive at 8 dollars and for a very small glass. I would certainly recommend this lodge.

"Elephant in Camp"

10.0

We had a great time at the A’Zambezi River Lodge…visiting Vic Falls, taking several river cruises and using it as a home base for a day trip into Botswana. The food was delicious and the location amazing…we even had an elephant come into camp during dinner! The people were friendly and helpful and a special shoutout to our guide Zulu! He treated us like VIP’s and we left as friends. We hope to return soon!
