Palace Hotel & Spa Buxton

Receptionist was very polite and our rooms were specious.

Despite being called a "palace", our experience was far from royal. Our rooms were tucked away down a back corridor by what looked like a staff entrance, giving the distinct impression of an old caretaker's storeroom. The furniture was incredibly cheap, the beds were uncomfortable, and we were only given one poor-quality pillow each. Furthermore, the windows were filthy, and the bathroom hadn't been updated since the 1980s. Breakfast was equally disappointing; there were no healthy options at all, the fruit was entirely tinned (not even a fresh apple in sight), and the coffee was unpleasantly acidic.

The grandeur and decor of the hotel was really lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed the short break. The breakfast was very good and the staff at breakfast very helpful. The room was well equipped and enjoyed a nice town view. It was very well located for the town and the Opera House.

As we visited on a mild June day we really didn’t expect the heating to be on in our room when we returned at the end of the evening, it was very hot and uncomfortable. The radiator was scorching hot and it was some time until it cooled after we turned the radiator off and opened a window. The hotel could save a lot of money by making sure the heating does not come on when it doesn’t need to. Although it was lovely to have 2 bottles of spa water in the fridge but we were disappointed that it was Harrogate spa water rather than Buxton spa water, we wondered and were surprised why they did that as we were in Buxton? I didn’t sleep well as throughout the night as the people in the room next to me kept opening and closing their door loudly, I know it’s a fire door and very heavy but they did not try to close it gently even though it was the middle of the night. I assume people were coming and going inbetween rooms. Although this was a disappointment I do not blame the hotel at all for this as it was just bad luck that we were next to some selfish people.

The location was perfect for us, it had parking, it had lovely public areas to relax, the bar was good, with a range of drinks and cocktails. The room was large, comfortable with a fridge and large fan.

There was nothing we didn’t like.

We were fortunate to have been upgraded to the Palace Suite. The reception area, staircase and corridors were attractively furnished and maintained. The hotel has maintained much of its grandeur, and is in an excellent location, with attractively maintained gardens.

The absence of an internal telephone with which to contact reception (or perhaps we failed to find it in our extensive suite!). Most of the window frames were in need of attention (but understandable given the obvious financial overheads)
