"Beautiful but not the luxury we expected for the price"

8.0

Beautiful hotel and surroundings, but very over-priced and lacking in attention to some details. We had a lovely 2 night break, the room was spacious and with a beautiful view over the river but lacked some of the details that you would expect in a hotel that charges as much as it does. The shower was covered in limescale and dated, and you could never get a consistent and comfortable temperature out of it. Very limited tea and coffee options within the room. The bed was hard and the pillows were flat and uncomfortable - I have had much more comfortable nights sleep in a premier inn. The spa was nice and the staff were pleasant enough, although I asked about the history of the building when we checked in given the plethora of WW2 pictures around the reception and was told ‘I think it used to be someone’s house’. A bit more research showed it had a much more interesting history than that which really I would expect staff to be able to at least hint at. I think my main gripe is how eye-wateringly over-priced the food is. Breakfast is £27.50 for very mediocre menu with no buffet options. I had eggs florentine which was absolutely drowning in vinegary Hollandaise sauce and our toast arrived way after we had finished the rest of our food and only after chasing. We had dinner the first night in the Cocktail bar - a very limited menu and not wanting anything too heavy I opted for the smoked salmon plate. I literally got one slice of tough sourdough with a slice of smoked salmon on it and some tired looking salad garnish on top. Very disappointing indeed for £16.50! Overall we had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the surroundings, but they need to up their game to live up to the image of luxury and grandeur they seek to portray, and I wouldn’t bother eating there ever again.

"Good short stay near the Hand and Flowers pub."

7.0

The cocktail bar was fantastic.

Impossible to control room temperature. It was too hot during the night, so the sleep was not as comfortable as we had hoped.

"Disappointing. A very tired old hotel - dirty on the outside, worn on the inside"

4.0

Very disappointed given the local reputation of this place. It didn’t start well… no EV charging (really? In 2026?) and they didn’t take American Express. Our room was tiny and you could hardly stand in the shower due to the sloping ceiling. The furniture was chipped and well worn. And the whole place - inside and out - just looks tired. Dirty on the outside, really worn on the inside - it really needs a thorough update. Tried to use the pool, but nowhere to sit around the edges as it was busy and like a Spanish resort with people leaving towels down to reserve their seats (even when they weren’t in the pool!). The good things: the gardens are well kept and the restaurant staff were very pleasant, while the food was just okay but nothing special. The locals I met for dinner on the second night were surprised by the downfall of Danesfield. Such a shame.

"Danesfield is a trusty option . It's NICE ....so much better than lots of the luxury 5 stars"

8.0

We have stayed many times at Danesfield house and are a VERY fussy family . It really does the job . It's not incredible no and its not really refined luxury ,but it is really good . service is great . food good . spa is workable ...very fine . Rooms lovely . especially if you have a room overlooking the front . We have had many different rooms . All lovely . The formica tables are a bit grim for dinner ... so doesnt feel 5 star (more canteen ) but overlooks the grounds and in the summer its lovely .... service always good and friendly . the small bar is a delight . We really like Danesfield and always suggest it as an affordable and nice option . It's not super high end ... but its very nice

"Thoroughly enjoyable stay"

8.0

A lovely 2-night stay at Danesfield House. A beautiful building, with extensive well-tended gardens. Some reviews refer to the hotel not being at its best. If it’s ultra-modern surroundings and facilities you want, this hotel may not be for you. Yes, a little attention to detail here & there would be great ( and elevate my review to 5 ⭐️) , however…….. The staff are superb…. Without exception, they are polite, professional, friendly, welcoming and professional! The spa, ( pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, gym and treatments) , is relaxing and spotless. My facial was fabulous! We thoroughly enjoyed both our breakfast and evening meals. Good choice and well cooked. Great service!
