Slaley Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort

We stayed for three nights in a Classic Family Room on a bed-and-breakfast basis, at a cost of £470. At that price point, I wasn’t expecting five-star facilities or service, but I do feel the hotel is being let down in a few key areas. Breakfast felt chaotic and poorly organised. Something always seemed to need restocking, and by the time one item had been replenished, something else had run out. The self-service setup was also unnecessarily awkward: mugs had to be collected from your table before getting drinks, milk jugs were located by the tea and coffee station, while the milk itself was elsewhere near the cereals. These may sound like minor issues, but when you’re managing breakfast for young children, it often meant several trips back and forth before everyone had something to eat and drink. It wasn’t a relaxing start to the day. I overheard someone saying you could order from the table, but this was never offered to us. The main car park is a short walk from the hotel, although guests can drive up to the entrance to unload luggage. As I arrived alone with my seven-year-old daughter and six-month-old baby, I unloaded our bags at reception before returning the car to the car park. I then had to walk back with both children to collect our luggage and take it to the room. Carrying a baby while managing bags was challenging, and neither my daughter nor I were offered any assistance at any point. Same applied for check out. I asked about utilising one of the trolleys. I was told I could use it, but wasn’t offered any help. The room itself was spacious, which was appreciated, but it felt tired and in need of refurbishment. The carpets looked worn and the bedding felt old and of relatively poor quality. To be clear, this is not intended as a criticism of the housekeeping team, but rather of the condition of the room itself. The room appeared serviced, but the furnishings and finishes are showing their age and detract from the overall experience. The system for charging purchases to your room also felt outdated and cumbersome. Guests are given a wooden room key along with a paper slip, which must be presented whenever charges are added to the room. Staff then need a specific machine to process the transaction. It felt unnecessarily complicated for everyone involved. The default question was always “cash or card?”, and when we asked to charge something to the room, it seemed to create an extra step. I don’t view this as a reflection on the staff, who were simply working with an inefficient process that is inconvenient for both guests and employees. One of the conveniences of staying in a hotel is being able to settle everything at the end of your stay, so a more streamlined system would significantly improve the guest experience. On a more positive note, the pool and spa facilities were good. Children’s swimming times were generous, and the pool area was a real highlight for my daughter. There were a few missing tiles in the pool, but considering the overall cost of the stay, I felt the leisure facilities offered very good value. We were able to book a spa treatment at short notice on a weekend which was appreciated. The hotel has beautiful grounds and plenty of potential, but the overall atmosphere felt slightly unusual. It aspires to a more luxurious experience than it currently delivers. This is not a luxury hotel, and at this price point it doesn’t need to be. However, it would still benefit from focusing on getting the fundamentals right. Overall, while there are some strong positives, particularly the leisure facilities and setting, the hotel feels as though it has a bit of an identity crisis. Addressing the basic issues around organisation, cleanliness and guest service would make a significant difference to the overall experience.

Overall, this venue is very good. We stayed for a 2 night spa break mid week. One person that should receive a huge thank you was Donna from the Spa. In all my years I cannot remember the last time that i had such a good massage treatment. I felt completely relaxed and slightly dehydrated after the session. Donna, you receive a 11/10 review. Having read previous reviews, we were pleased to see that there were no children around in the pool area. The food menu choices in 2 of the restaurants were adequate, although there could have been a wider range of choices available. Lastly, thank you to Marcus who greeted us upon arrival, a true gentleman and a great ambassador for this venue. The only point that prevented us giving a 5 star review was that the mattress was rock hard.

Stayed at Slaley for one night to attend nearby wedding. We were made welcome by Marcus on reception, and found other staff very friendly .hotel is quite impressive set in the countryside not far from Hexham and Corbridge. Room was clean and comfortable, breakfast buffet was great with plenty of choice. Didn’t try the facilities as only there one night. I think though hotel is a little dated and could do with cheering up, but wouldn’t be put off by that.

The customer service was wonderful throughout. Morgan was a great host for the event on the terrace on Friday 12th June. He was attentive, always on hand and happy to help. A great asset to the team.

Beautiful hotel in beautiful grounds. Good facilities and bar. Friendly staff and good value.
