We stayed at the Pestana Ocean bay in the last two weeks of March 2026. We had an enjoyable holiday in spite of a mid Atlantic storm restricting activities for 3 or 4 days in the first week before the sun returned. The hotel was very helpful and comfortable during this bad weather. Our room was on the 5th floor with superb views over the sea shore and the stunning sunsets. We mostly used the stairs, to keep fit, but the lifts were fine. Our room was comfortable and had a TV, fridge, kettle and electric hob, although didn’t use this. The balcony and chairs were comfortable. Good free wifi. There are two pools with ample sun-beds. The sea shore is pebbly, with black sand at low tide, but fun to swim in when calm. The hotel is situated right by the promenade that will take you as far as Funchal in one direction and to the lovely fishing village of Camara de Lobos the other. Walking towards Funchal takes you through a long, wet but well lit tunnel. We walked a lot - most enjoyable. We also found a number of Levada’s to walk, some accessible by foot from the hotel, others by the very good service buses @ 2 euro per person per trip. We enjoyed the food. Good quality and plenty of choice. Extensive breakfast dishes with a good fried breakfast and coffee available. Wine free to help yourself to at evening meals and plenty of soft drinks and water available all day. Evening meal ok but gets busy to get a table so best to go for 6:30 or wait till second sitting after 7:30. The island is very mountainous with very steep roads - not recommended for car hire unless you are a very confident driver. Although the hotel has a courtesy bus into Funchal we didn’t use it, preferring the service buses with the local stop just the other side of the tunnel. Good tip is to use Google maps for the bus routes and bus stops. Taking an island tour is recommended, but beware it can be colder and wetter on the top and to the north of the island, depending upon the prevailing wind direction. The staff all over the hotel were very friendly and helpful

It was our first time at the Pestana Ocean Bay in Maderia, we had the most loveliest time. The staff were fantastic and so kind, Limon, Maria, Irene and all of the staff were so lovely in the restaurant. The reception team were brilliant and so helpful. The view's from the hotel are beautiful, the food choice is Great and the rooms are so comfortable. We will definitely be returning again. Thank you so much. 😊
