Devonshire House Hotel

The room smelt of stale sweat and was generally tired and neglected and in dire need of a complete overhaul. We were woken up at 1am by 2 women screaming at each other right outside our room and there was no intervention by hotel staff for an hour until the police were finally called. Turned out the hotel have no security staff to deal with incidents like this. I complained on checkout and was given no form of compensation but given an email address to write and complain to. To add insult to injury 3 days have now passed and I haven’t even received any response.

Very reasonable rates on a Friday night - twin room for a Liverpool University visit. Very easy to drive to with an enormous car park. Have stayed here on two University visits. Took the bus into town at night and then the next morning to the Uni. Bus stop across the road Bus number 7 £8.80 for 2 people return - was sooo easy. Only in the room to sleep and it was perfectly fine. Not the Ritz but cost us very little. The grounds will look stunning in the Spring/Summer. Would and have returned. Lovely staff.

On arrival the receptionist offered us a double bedded room instead of a twin bedded room. We agreed but thought she said on the 1st floor but in fact it was on the 3rd floor - no lift (broken). Also it looked out over the back and across the road was an old car junk yard, instead of the garden view we thought we had booked. It was only an overnight stay and we left at 9 a.m. so didn't bother complaining. Th hotel was OK but looking very tired!

The hotel is convenient for parking and has twin rooms which we like. The room was large but lacked character. Even the bathroom, which had lovely red tiling with white above, outshone it!! We didn't have breakfast, which is optional.

Good public transport nearby. Excellent Turkish restaurant close (10mins walk). Never ate in hotel

Room basic but clean & as we expected. The room was too hot for our liking but ask at reception what can be done if you have the same problem. Plenty of parking spaces.

Very tired hotel but clean. Towels changed each day. Some basic additions to the room would have made a difference eg another mirror, possibly full length - there was only one which was over the basin in the bathroom. A lamp or wall light over the double bed - the 2 singles had wall lights. An extractor fan in the bathroom. Only 3 hangers provided. No hairdryer. Breakfast was reasonable. Evening meal and service on the last evening (Saturday) was poor, though the food on other evenings had looked good.

Im afraid the room was run down, tiles on the bathroom floor were broken, no head boards on the beds.

As a business traveller with around 100 hotel nights a year I do get totally bored of the big chain menus. Devonshire house has a menu with normal favourites but some additional items such as a fresh greek salad. The kitchen are happy to make anything you might want assuming they have the ingredients. None of the staff from check in to maintenance is stuck to the corporate script. Friendly, helpful, flexible staff, make up for a building which is a bit long in the tooth.

First time at this hotel and we won’t be going back. First impressions it smelt like an old people’s home stale carpets. Size of room ok three windows with blinds and net curtains the blinds needed cleaning due to windows that didn’t close properly, the nets wanted throwing out they had big holes in them. Furniture had been painted and the paint was coming off in places. The bathroom had a hot tap that wouldn’t turn off properly, a sink cracked in two places and ceramic tiles on floor were cracked but it was clean. On the plus side the bed was clean and comfortable. This hotel is tired and dated.
