Wow.. Would NOT recommend staying here. The only good thing I can say about this place was that the food was mostly great.. When you are finally served. Don't make dinner reservations if you are starving. The small buffet is only open until 5 p.m. then you have to order room service if you didnt pre-arrange all your dinner reservations. The average wait time is 1.5-2.5 hours by the time you get your entrée. The maintenance/upkeep of this property is -0. I was horrified. Scews sticking out of doors, holes in the towels. Filthy!!! I took pictures. Also wake up at 6 am to reserve pool chairs. Even though you arent supposed to, if you wait, you wont get one. Our room was infested with mosquitoes and spiders! 2 hours before our tepenyaki dinner reservation our reservation was given to someone else so we had to eat at Spices again.. Dinner was almost 3 hours long! The entertainment was HORRIBLE! Not the performers fault! They were great dancers... Who lip synced to a beat up sound track, horrible costumes and no scenery or props. Think low budget high school play, but worse with some thong costumes thrown in to wake the audience up with some ass. The staff was great with the exception of the boy and woman who checked us in. The end....

"You are on your own"

I am a small business owner and rarely leave poor reviews but felt it would help others when deciding to stay at this property. Hotel doesn't have a "front desk" anyone you ask for anything will tell you to talk to the concierge. Supposedly there is a concierge at the lower level of each individual building, we only saw ours twice on our 5 night stay and he was basically useless. We asked for a bottle of liquor for our room (certainly willing to pay). We were told to talk to one of the bartenders. We asked if they had an ice machine, no ice machines but room service can bring you ice. We ate at the Asian restaurant and noticed they also had a habachi option. We asked but were told we only had a standard reservation. So seeing as we had another reservation in 3 days I asked if they could change it from standard to Hibachi, you guessed it, I was told to talk to the concierge. My wife had a health scare, can't call the front desk because there isn't even a button on the phone so I called room service. They assured me someone would call back in 2min, no call back. So we had to walk to the front of the hotel and track someone down who was absolutely no help. He didn't even know the pharmacy in the hotel was open which we figured out on our own. Asked for change 3 times so I could tip their employees to no avail, they don't have change. I could go on and on...They do have a beautiful beach and decent pools however if you want a pool chair wakeup at 6:30 or no dice!

This was my 5th stay - I have seen some different situations since I have started staying at this property My concierge- at Villa 28- was beyond fantastic!! She was the best EVER!!! However, we went to lunch, on our last final day… our sever never ordered our food- we waited 1& 1/2 hours - I never ate- just because it rained most of the week and wanted to spend more time on the beach We asked for an umbrella, for 2 days… our wonderful concierge got us one immediately When I asked for one- the responses were- “there’s one in your closet “- obviously, there isn’t one- otherwise, I wouldn’t be asking. It’s my favorite place in the whole World… I just have noticed a lot of changes since I first started visiting there

Great property! Food and drinks were excellent. The beach and pools were beautiful. Quiet, so better for older adults. Walkable to shopping and dining. Overall a great property 😊

I want to start with we've visited this property on many occasions and really used to love it. Last time we were there was the summer of 24 and it seemed like Barcelo had been making a bunch of changes enough for the better. Cabanas used to be free now they charge for those. They seem to do work on the property all the time especially during prime time winter break 2024 the week we were there December 21st through the 28th. There was a lot of Maintenance being done on the building. One of the rivers they have there was completely drained and was being repainted that smelled like oil paint for days. Maintenance all around the property that made you feel that this wasn't a luxury property that we spent a lot of money on and wanted to try to relax. We heard some pounding and other Construction noises. The restaurants Spices that was adjacent to the main pool was closed for the first 3 days while we were there and we had to go up to the main building and have breakfast over there then go back to the pool. The staff at restaurants don't seem to listen very well, you order one thing and they bring you whatever they want. Wait staff at Spices for breakfast literally took 1.5 hours for breakfast and the place was basically empty. The hosts at Spices seem to want to seat you at the worst table possible and don't try to make you feel like you're a special client ever. Always seem to focus on themselves and being lazy versus trying to really shine. Not sure we're going back ever again.
