For context, we stayed at the resort for two weeks, arriving on 5 December 2025 and checking out on 19 December 2025. We celebrated my 30th birthday during our stay and did not book the Sun Club.
This is a detailed review intended to help future guests make an informed decision. A two week stay is long enough to experience patterns rather than one off issues.
Check-in
We arrived at the hotel around 9:00pm and were welcomed with a glass of sparkling sangria, which was a nice touch. Check-in was a little slow due to a system issue and the arrival of a large group, so we opted to locate our own room rather than wait.
We stayed in Building 10, Room 10307. There are no lifts anywhere in the hotel, which is worth noting for guests with mobility issues, although we managed our cases ourselves.
The Room – Building 10, Room 10307
The room was clean, and the bathroom was modern and a good size for two people. Facilities included two double beds, mini fridge, desk area, large TV, wardrobe, safe, mini ironing board with iron, hairdryer, and a balcony. The location of this building was excellent.
The mini fridge was initially stocked with four local beers (Presidente), Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, and American Fanta. These items were not replenished once consumed, only bottled water was restocked daily.
However, the room itself felt tired and poorly refreshed. Everything had been painted over in stark white paint, which gave a cheap rather than clean impression. Storage was a real issue, there is only one small drawer in the bedside cabinet. Additional coat hangers had to be requested via the app (when it was working).
We also had to report an electrical safety issue, as part of a broken plug was stuck inside a socket. This was rectified within two days after emailing the hotel.
Hot water was very unreliable throughout our stay. We raised this via email but received no response, and getting genuinely hot water felt more like luck than design.
Food & Drinks
Food was a major talking point during our stay. Unfortunately, we were both unwell twice; once after the teppanyaki experience and again after eating at Chopsticks. We suspect ice may have been a contributing factor, as although the water is described as filtered, it is not suitable for drinking.
We avoided the Kaleidoscope buffet after day one. There were large numbers of bees on the food, and I had to retrieve toast from a toaster using shared metal tongs, which raised concerns around both hygiene and safety given the heat of the equipment.
For breakfast, we mainly opted for Windows buffet or an iced coffee and pastries, which felt like the safer and more consistent option.
Windows buffet has a good selection and is large enough for the hotel’s capacity. The cooked-to-order food — mostly meats — was genuinely excellent in both quality and flavour. However, we frequently struggled to find plates and cutlery, and poor guest etiquette combined with slow replenishment spoiled the experience at busy times.
La Cala (paid restaurant) was mixed. The lobster at $89 is not worth the price; however, the filet steak (over ten ounces) at $27 absolutely is — although the lack of sauces was surprising. On one occasion, La Cala was also closed for a private event, with no notice or signage to inform guests in advance.
At Tierra, service felt unwelcoming and inconsistent. We were seated and then left for an extended period and had to actively ask to be served, which made the experience uncomfortable.
De Mario was very disappointing — frozen meals reheated in a microwave and not enjoyable.
Sunnyside / Blue Water Grill on the beach was reliable both during the day and in the evening.
Tiki Taco was hit and miss. The beef was poor, but the chicken options were tasty, and the nachos were a nice touch.
The Pizza Stop was the standout food offering of the entire resort. Great options, freshly made to order, and staff who genuinely looked after guests. The addition of simple sides such as garlic bread or dough balls, along with sauces like garlic butter or mayonnaise, would elevate it further.
It’s also worth noting that building works were carried out during our stay, with no communication via the app, notice boards, or signage. As a result, two restaurants were not open, again with no notice provided, and we had to report trip hazards around the resort.
Drinks
The local beer, Presidente, was surprisingly good, with no strange aftertaste. Cocktails and local spirits were widely available, although despite premium bottles being on display, they are not used in standard bars.
We mainly used the Sip & Dip pool bar during the day and the Starboard bar in the evenings. Bottled water was provided daily in the room (around four bottles per day), with additional water available from the coffee café on request and water stations at the pool bar during the day.
Evening Entertainment
We attended the magic show and the White Party. The magic show was cheesy but good fun. The White Party has serious potential, but the music choice let it down, it felt dated and repetitive rather than energetic.
At the main bar, there was a pianist and singer. Initially enjoyable, but it quickly became apparent that the same songs were played every night, at the same tempo, with no variation. Over a two week stay, this became tiresome.
The animation team worked hard to encourage guests to dance, but declining sometimes resulted in visible frustration from staff. With such repetitive music, enthusiasm naturally drops.
Daytime Entertainment
Two members of the animation team truly stood out: Tokito and Chocolate. We loved the aqua gym with Tokito and the beach games with Chocolate; both were fun and inclusive.
More importantly, they were the only two who took time to speak to us simply to have a conversation, which was genuinely appreciated.
Beach & Pool
The beach is stunning, with white sand and staff working throughout the day to keep it clean. There are some rocky areas, and we witnessed someone get stung by a sea urchin, so we would strongly recommend sea shoes.
Sunbed reserving is common. We regularly saw guests placing towels at both the pool and beach and then not using one or the other. Arriving early or being prepared to move towels that have been left for over two hours is advisable, staff will assist if needed.
There is plenty of shade on the beach and umbrellas around the pool. The pool itself was clean, with staff working during the day to remove debris brought in by guests returning from the beach.
The toilets at the water sports centre and behind the Windows buffet were spotless, and we were impressed by the cleanliness in these areas.
Hotel Staff, Payments & Practicalities
This is where we experienced the most frustration.
For my birthday, we received complimentary sparkling wine, a fruit plate, and a sign, which was appreciated. The concierge advised that if we paid $85 in cash, champagne and chocolate covered strawberries would be arranged — which we never received. Our housekeeper kindly decorated the room with flowers and balloons, but this did not explain what the $85 payment was for.
We were also told we could charge items to our room and pay at the end of our stay, which later turned out to be incorrect. We had to pay upfront for La Cala, which was not an issue in itself, but it contradicted what we had been told.
The same confusion arose when enquiring about Sun Club. Via WhatsApp, we were told we could upgrade and charge it to our room. When we attempted to do so, we were told this was incorrect. We were then informed day-by-day access was possible, arrived at Sun Club, were told it was possible, a call was made to a manager, and then we were told it was not possible; except for our final day only.
For guests travelling from Europe, it’s worth bringing smaller denominations of dollars or pesos. The hotel made it awkward to obtain change, which often resulted in over-tipping, and it felt intentional rather than coincidental. The cash machine on-site was also not compatible with our bank (NatWest).
Several members of staff rolled their eyes when we made reasonable requests or asked to change an order, particularly in the coffee shop and hotel shops. The coffee shop clearly needs more staff at peak times, as some staff appeared overwhelmed and became hostile as a result.
Spa
We booked a massage for 10:00am on my birthday via the concierge. I arrived at 9:45am, only to be told my appointment had actually been booked for 9:00am. I was left sitting while it was debated whether I could still receive my treatment. Thankfully, they were able to fit me in.
The massage itself was wonderful. The spa was clean, calm, and had consistently hot water in the showers — something we struggled with in the room. I could have happily stayed there all day.
This resort has a beautiful setting and some genuinely excellent staff, but after a two-week stay it became clear that many issues were patterns rather than isolated incidents, particularly around communication, service consistency, room maintenance, food hygiene, payment clarity, and entertainment variety.
This review is shared to help future guests make an informed decision and in the hope that improvements are made, as with better communication and follow-through, this resort could be a much stronger offering.
