Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort

I've gone to this resort more than once and it was fine. It's located literally across the highway from Marin San Juan airport so you really hear the planes. Somehow the plane noise didn't really bother me (I guess I just got used to it) and it didn't keep me awake at night, but be advised: you WILL be hearing planes landing and taking off. My biggest complaint this time was that they chose to repair a pipe right next to the pool bar during peak pool times, so there was loud drilling into concrete for several days in a row. I know repairs have to happen, but during peak pool times? So this, plus airplane noise, significantly reduced my enjoyment of the hotel. But the silver lining is the gem that is Fernando, the man who maintains the pool area. Fernando runs a very tight ship but is unfailingly polite and friendly. He makes sure rules are followed but he does it for everybody's benefit. He goes out of his way to make sure the guests are comfortable and their needs are taken care of. I hope Marriott knows what a treasure they have in Fernando.

This is a beautiful hotel on a pretty part of the beach with a nice pool. The restaurant and coffee bar offer great choices. The wine selection was very good.

The proximity to the airport and nearby construction made it very noisy to the point we had to keep the door up the balcony closed most of the time.

Our reservation was on January 27, 2026 under C. Milligan with room1208 assigned for our 3 night stay. Upon checking in, our first impression was less than favorable for a hotel charging over $500/night since my expectations are different when I am paying $150/night. Our disappointment started with the front desk associate, Ms. Aurimar’s flat personality delivering no enthusiasm, no pleasantries, no hello, no smile, no "welcome to Courtyard by Marriot, how may I help you”..., basically nothing friendly or positive occurred! Besides the valet attendants, front desk associates are the guests first interaction and we noticed that not one of the other 2 front desk associates looked up from their computers to make eye contact, or say hello / good afternoon, no smile..., overall unapproachable! I do not know if Aurimar's personality is always flat and unapproachable, but if she was having a bad day, she does not need to let the customers see her bad mood! We checked in at 2:00 and Aurimar stated our room would not be ready until 4:00. I do not recall if Aurimar said she would call us if our room was ready before 4:00, but that never happened. Since we had a 2 hour wait after checking in during the prime hours of sun at the pool, Aurimar could have offered to put our luggage in a secure place if we wanted to change into pool attire or grab some lunch without having luggage in tow. It’s a small touch that can deliver a positive impression! On the first full day, we were out of the room from 11 - 4:00 only to find that housekeeping did not touch our room. Again on the second full day, we were out off the room from 11 - 3:45 and when we returned at 4:00, housekeeping knocks on the door wanting to clean our room at 4:00! I stated it was too late and it will wait until we have checked out the following morning! I do not recall reading that housekeeping may or may not clean your room during our stay. Basically, this was another misstep that did not need to happen. We ate at the outdoor patio twice for lunch and thought we would grab a sandwich after we checked out on our last day. When we went to the restaurant, we were told the outdoor restaurant was closed between 11-11:30, but we could order from the bar area. We sat at a table across from the bar and ended up leaving at 11:20 since the bartender worried more about chatting with co-workers than trying to generate money for the hotel she worked for. Another misstep that did not have to happen. The rockstar of the entire hotel staff was Fernando Carreras and a breath of fresh air when I went to the pool! His positive demeanor, smile and very friendly personality was engaging and a very sharp contrast from the front desk associates! Some people might discount Mr. Carreras because off his position, but on the contrary, he showed more appreciation for guests being at the hotel than other staff that I encountered. For many guests, they come to Puerto Rico for the sun and warm weather and Mr. Carrerras takes the opportunity to engage and have fun with the guests. When guests ask for a towel, Mr. Carrerras responds by saying "you are just in time because he has fresh towels that are extra soft”! He delivers countless other fun comments that engage the customers and make them feel welcome. While talking with Mr. Carreras, he told me when he interviewed for a position with this hotel, he specifically asked for the position he currently holds. Many departments in the hotel could take lessons from Fernando on how to “Wow” and favorably engage with hotel guests! A simple smile, hello, and “my pleasure” when a guest asks for something shows the guests they are valued. When I stay at a Four Seasons or Ritz property, the level of service is impeccable. There is no reason why Courtyard by Marriott cannot make an effort to deliver better service for a better guest experience. The positive moments guests experience will impact their decision to return or not to the hotel in the future. Hotel guests have many options with other hotels or VRBO’s,and with tourism down across the board, each guest should be valued because without them, the hotel will not exist. When I have stayed at other hotels on PR, many times front desk associates deliver the same poor service toward guests. I am not sure if the bad attitude is a cultural behavior with Puerto Ricans, but it is common knowledge that Puerto Ricans do not like people from the mainland U.S. If that is true, that attitude is only causing a negative impact of your brand and image if people decide to visit or return to PR!

We just returned from another wonderful stay at the Courtyard Marriott in Isla Verde, and once again, everything was perfect! We’ve been coming here for years because we truly love it. The beachfront location is unbeatable, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere is relaxed, welcoming, and consistently excellent. A huge shoutout to Fernando by the pool - he’s the heart of the resort!! Larger than life, fun, outgoing, and genuinely funny, he brings such great energy to the pool area. He greets everyone like family and has a way of making guests feel included and welcome. At one point, we reported a lost phone (which we later realized we had with us the whole time!). Fernando and other staff immediately stepped in and handled everything with professionalism and kindness. When we discovered it was our mistake, he couldn’t have been more gracious and good-humored about it. He turned what could have been an embarrassing situation into no big deal at all. Fernando is a tremendous asset to this hotel and a big reason we’ll keep coming back year after year. Already looking forward to our next visit!

We lost power in our room twice and had to move to another room our last night. Not a big deal except it was late so didn’t get much sleep. Also, the pool area is nice but too many birds and they made a mess on many of the lounge chairs. Staff should do a better job of keeping them clean. And the umbrellas were in bad shape. However, the staff was friendly and attentive to your food and drink requests.

We celebrated our wedding at the Courtyard by Marriott in Isla Verde, and everything was absolutely wonderful. The location was perfect, making it easy and convenient for all of our guests. The food was spectacular—we chose the Puerto Rican buffet, and it was a huge hit. Our guests were extremely happy and couldn’t stop complimenting the flavors and variety. Thank you to the entire team for helping make our wedding day so special and memorable. We truly had an amazing experience and highly recommend this venue for weddings or any special event.
