"Disappointing overall"

Disappointing service, food is not good. Servers are inattentive and not well trained to check on guests and ensure a quality experience, itโ€™s hard to get their attention.

The hotel was beautiful and the service was top notch. My family loved the pool and the view was amazing. My 3 year old also loved the fresh cookies and milk delivered to our room! We will definitely we returning!

"Amazing vibe"

10.0

Stayed at Asbury Ocean Club this month and had an amazing time. The service was wonderful from start to finishโ€”everyone we interacted with, from the front desk to the pool staff, was friendly and helpful. The pool area had such a chill, resort vibeโ€”perfect for relaxing. Food and drinks were awesome too. Canโ€™t wait to return!

"Really wanted to give a 5 but . . ."

6.0

Upon arriving, no greeting of any kind from the valet, just a question about whether or not I had a car. Check-in was another disappointment, as desk was unstaffed and left me and others standing around. The hotel itself is breathtakingly and thoughtfully appointed, food and drink are terrific, and rooms are exceptionally clean with great bedding. Beautiful view of ocean and beautiful pool area experience are diminished by subpar and inconsistent service at the pool bar (along with empty pitchers and glasses left on tables for long periods of time). Someone has dropped the ball big time in terms of overall training/friendliness/attentiveness of staff for a property of this caliber. The highs make the lows even more obvious.

"Ok, not worth the price"

Nice hotel, but very overpriced for what you get. The rooms are very nice. The pillows on the bed were awful. The food at the restaurant was awful, but cocktails delicious.

"Pleasantly surprised; a 5-star oasis right in the middle of Asbury Park's oceanfront district"

10.0

I came across this property from Forbes and American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts, so I had to take it seriously. I was not familiar with Asbury Park either, but I wanted to explore the New Jersey shore and this is the only FHR property currently listed in all of New Jersey. I had booked a top level suite (poolside terrace) and was upgraded to the Penthouse Suite. It's not exactly a penthouse because all the hotel rooms are on the 4th floor of a much taller building, but it is a corner suite with nice views and direct access to the pool area, which is great if you like swimming late at night or want to snag a good lounge before the pool officially opens at 8am. The downside is that it's easy for someone to come to your room from the outside and look or try to go inside, but fortunately nobody seemed curious. The room was furnished nicely. and we liked the suite. I normally would have liked it more had the bathroom not been part of the bedroom but you could see the sunlight and outdoors from the shower (and there was a large curtain you could use if you wanted privacy), so the layout actually worked. Everything worked fine and the AC was excellent. Only thing I didn't like were the bath towels which we thought were small. Grab some towels at the pool area and bring them to your room. I had the feeling that a lot of thought went into designing this property and that somebody thought about all the little things. If you go to the gym, bring a water bottle with you although there are cups inside the drawers below the water fountain designed only for bottles. The gym was very good and it has a separate room with two punching and kicking bags and a third room with a yoga studio. I found some of the choices of equipment a bit curious since it is not a very large gym in terms of equipment, but it is high quality stuff in there and it has all the necessary items you would want to find such as foam rollers. If you know what you are doing in a gym, you can make use of everything and get what you want out of it. The pool is good, but I would have been happier if the pool had been heated a few degrees warmer. Not many people were in the pool probably because the water was a bit cool. A good 5-star hotel heated pool should feel heated and it's a really important thing not to cut those few degrees because it's a centerpiece of a hotel property. Although I've read complaints about service on prior reviews, we found that our food and beverage came out timely and we felt and remarked in real time that there were plenty of people working all over the place. We didn't see evidence of anything being understaffed. The best part of this property is the food and nightly entertainment. It is like having a private eating club since outsiders can't dine in and it's a lifesaver here -- if you don't have a dinner reservation at a good local restaurant on a weekend in the summer, you're not getting a table. We were on our first visit to Asbury Park, and aside from one local Italian restaurant Brando's (which was rather good but you should know: no pizzettas on Friday or Saturday after 7pm), we didn't know where to eat and had no reservations. Over a 48-hour period, we ate all meals but that one dinner on property and every item we had was excellent and the prices were reasonable as well. The menus are extensive and interesting; the food was tasty and presented nicely. I would have liked to see smoked salmon on the breakfast menu. One night featured a pianist who was very overqualified for that gig. The other evening was a couple -- a guitarist-vocalist and a vocalist. They have a rotating roster of very good performers and there are lots of concerts and music venues in this small town. There is also a spa on property for facials and massages, but we didn't use it. It took me less than 15 minutes to go from my room and checkout to an Uber and then reach the New Jersey train platform about a mile away. The whole trip door to door to and from Manhattan using public transport and Uber for the last mile took about 3 hours each way, and we liked Asbury Park with its nice central town area, the Ocean Grove district nearby and the ability to walk into town in about 15 minutes (or ride one of the hotel's bicycles). The bowling lane is 2 minutes away and there are plenty of music venues and decent restaurants and shopping in town. There is a free shuttle roaming the streets that you can use to get into town. We walked around but mostly avoided the riff raff on the beach and were plenty happy with the hotel's pool area and food instead. Outdoor concerts end by 10pm so late night noise is not an issue at this property which is near to an outdoor concert venue. This property is a great place if you want to have a 5-star experience and go around town at a more reasonable rate than the Hamptons and are happy to just luxuriate at a hotel property where you can see the beach and the goings on across the street but just stay at your own place. The beach area is not particularly upmarket and it's a good bet that the people who stay at this hotel wouldn't come here quite as willingly if it were not there. Whoever developed this property probably took a huge risk sticking this 5-star property in the middle of this area, but the concept seems to have worked, and I'm told that a second building adjacent to this one is slated to begin construction soon. The destination is easy to reach via public transport with the train, and we had no problem getting around town with Uber, the shuttle, on bicycle or using our feet. It was a really good first visit to a place I might never have gone to. We might even come back!
