"Bait & switch"

4.0

If you’re looking for a used car dealership experience this is your place! As a family who has traveled here at least once a year for the last 6+ years we will seriously consider returning. The me would expect if they paid for a room that’s what they’d get, nope! Front desk attempted to play dumb and say they couldn’t see we had paid to stay in the presidential wing and instead were trying to insist we were in the old or ā€œhistoricā€ section and we were mistaken on our reservation. Even after showing the confirmation it took another 20+ minutes of ā€œgoing out back to talk to the managerā€ to get told we could only get you into the room you actually paid for for one of the nights, so we would be inconvenienced and have to move rooms. Talk about bait & switch, so glad we’re a part of their loyalty program.

"Grand old fireplace is gas!"

6.0

The Hotel is a bit tired, yes, but that is part of the charm. The one glaring item that was outside of this charm is that there is a HUGE beuatifu old fireplace in the lobby when you enter. But a GAS fireplace has been installed!!!! What big swing and miss to have a crackling wood fireplace to bring guests back to the resorts long and old history.

"A wonderful experience!"

10.0

From the time we drove up to the valet to park to the staff greeting us at the front desk to the restaurant staff and anyone we encountered throughout the hotel was friendly, helpful and made this experience amazing. You can tell the staff takes pride in their work. The history of the hotel and its well thought-out upgrades and the restoration make this resort a unique and special stay. I recommend the hotel tours, which I believe are each morning!

We truly love this property — the setting is absolutely beautiful, and the ski area is fantastic.

There is so much potential here, which makes it even more disappointing to share the following concerns. Unfortunately, the hotel feels very poorly managed. Cleanliness is a serious issue. The carpets throughout the property are visibly dirty, with dust and hair buildup in many areas. The fitness room is disorganized and not well maintained, and the indoor swimming pool was frankly unpleasant — hygiene rules are not enforced (guests walking in with outdoor shoes, no showering before entering the pool, etc.), which makes the experience uncomfortable. Dining was mixed. We very much enjoyed 1902 and the coffee shop — both were lovely. However, food elsewhere felt more like basic fast food and did not match the level one would expect from a property of this caliber. The rooms are clearly dated, which we understand given the renovation plans. However, the issue goes beyond aesthetics. Many fixtures were not functioning properly — the toilet and sink had problems, and the bathtub had visible orange water stains and a faucet that would not fully turn off. These are not cosmetic concerns but maintenance and management issues. We stayed in the Presidential Wing last year, and that experience was noticeably better. Bretton Arms also feels significantly more tidy and well cared for. We understand renovations are underway, but we sincerely hope they go beyond surface updates. This property deserves stronger management, consistent maintenance, and higher operational standards to truly reflect its remarkable location and history.

"Charming as Always, But Lacking Compared to Past Experiences"

6.0

I came up here as a belated birthday gift--a weekend alone, no kids or spouse, to write and relax! I don't ski, but have always loved this place--the historic charm, the views, the coziness. And while I enjoyed my stay, some things were lacking, compared to previous trips. Small item...but there was no bar soap in the room? So you have to wash your hands with shower gel? When I asked housekeeping, they said they were all out. Then I didn't have a robe in my room, and since the locker rooms are closed for reno, I had to change in the general use bathrooms on the lower level. When I was done with the pool, I had to dash in my towel back to the bathroom to change! The pillows were a bit flat, there was no mini-fridge (I brought some snacks that needed refrigerating), and finally--this is just a personal taste thing--no classical playing in the main lobby. Part of the appeal of this place is the timeless charm; and while I LOVE John Denver and James Taylor, they feel a bit out of place playing from the loud speakers than more ambient background classical (as befits the grandieur of the Lobby). This place will always have a spot in my heart, so I'll be back--but I hope it's a bit more seamless next time.
