Pestana Grand Premium Ocean Resort

Madeira is lovely island 🏝️ and this hotel 🏨 is quite good and well located and the room is great, staff is helpful and friendly everywhere BUT I have to admit that there are moments that it doesn’t feel like a 5star as although the breakfast is well catered the dinner is quite limited for vegetarians and vegans with a repetition of options almost every day… I would like more options as it looks like the seafood and meat lovers are prioritised and I felt let down… Another aspect that would be welcomed is if it was an adults only hotel without any screaming kids, but I understand why that is not happening 🤷‍♂️ Regards.

Lovely Staff and beautiful gardens and amazing view over the ocean! A big praise to the gardening ladies who work very hard.

The Pestana Grand has a great spot on the Promenade, directly on the ocean, each unit with its own balcony, great staff all around. I immensely enjoyed it for my 2 weeks on Madeira.

Stayed for 10 nights to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and overall enjoyed our stay. The staff deserve special mention as they are all very friendly and helpful. Rooms are spacious and clean, we had a lovely ocean view. Room cleaning was good but have never experienced such worn towels, some with holes! The speciality ‘a la carte’ restaurants serve good quality, well prepared meals, again the staff are worthy of extra praise. The gardens and pool area are well maintained, there are plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, though the pool lining and some tiled areas are in need of refurbishment. The inside bar, reception and atrium are pleasant and comfortable, but expect only ‘ok’ evening entertainment (as with many hotels of this type!). One of the things that could definitely do with improving is the buffet restaurant. The management are well aware of customer dissatisfaction in this area but seem disinclined to do anything. Eating breakfast on the terrace is a very pleasant experience but the hot food selection and quality are well below what should be expected. The, very average, hot food is served in a cramped and often very busy area, the food is allowed to get cold and isn’t replenished frequently enough. This is also true at evening meal time. There is an annoying tendency at dinner for staff to try to collect plates from your table even before you finish eating and certainly the moment your knife and fork hit the plate! We very soon opted to eat in the speciality restaurants every night. The hotel is in a nice location, about 50mins walk into Funchal. We found the local Bolt taxi service an exceptional service and low cost.

The property was very clean and all decor was like knew.The staff were excellent and very helpful. The room was cleaned every day and the furniture was like knew.There was always plenty to eat and would suit all tastes. We had an excellent holiday with no downsides.

Nothing's unique about this property! Food is good but the selection is poor.

Basically nothing worked reliably. If were had bathtowells, we missed pooltowels. One day we had instant coffee in the room, next not. One day glasses and cups were washed, next not. Initially our bathrobes were so tiny, my husband could barely use it as a cape. The belt of the thing was so worn out it was like rope, long strings hanging out. When we showed them in reception they thought it was really funny. My question is how come such rags are still in circulation! On third time we got bath robes that actually could be worn. It is really tireing to keep ower and ower again asking something that should be there by default. The bed had no cover mattress so the strings were clearly pressing through. At first we had two huge pillows and we asked to get smaller ones, we got them next day in the afternoon. The food. Lot of trays filled with food. It seems there quantity is trying to cover the quality. Initially we thought, that Madeiran cuisine does not do good cold cuts or cheese, until visited normal local shops and found good quality meat and cheese. The only thing that met the par was the fruit. At breakfast the warm dishes were simply not good at any rate. Not to mention that no ham nor bacon was available. Probably too expensive to offer in five star hotel. The last days we simply skipped breakfast and dinner. Not coming back.

Just returned from this hotel after booking just a few weeks before. Firstly this is a really nice hotel, very clean and rooms very spacious. If you are wanting a lively holiday this is not the hotel for you as it seems to be frequented by a lot of the older generation (me included). The pool area and gardens are well maintained and look lovely. Staff are quite attentive apart from one or two in the restaurant. Rooms done every day i.e. beds a and bins emptied, towels sorted etc. We had a side sea view which meant there was no sun on the balcony till late afternoon (if the sun was out that is). The only gripe I have with this hotel is the restaurant. The main hot food counter is far to small and enclosed for the size of the hotel thus creating a congestion. I don't think the hotel was full when we were there so I would hate to be there in full season when it is full. We were half board. The breakfast was ok and I always had something. Good selection of fruit/bread etc. However if you wanted bacon you had to order it and stand waiting. The first couple of days they were normal size rashers but by the 3rd day they were half the width of a normal rasher. If you wanted tea you had to order it and most days it came barely warm so had to send it back for a hotter pot. The last couple of days we requested hot tea when we ordered it and they finally got it right. The food on an evening is not what I would call 5* which is what the hotel rates itself as (Jet2 4*+). I do admit I am quite fussy so some nights I only ate minimal salad and bread followed by dessert. We always ordered a bottle of water with our evening meal, which the first few nights was brought at room temperature so again we had to request cold water for which they charged 4.5 euros + a 10% service charge per bottle. I must say I object to them automatically adding a service charge especially when a couple of nights I had to go find someone to get me a bottle of water. Not meaning to sound mean but I would much rather tip at my own discretion where it is due as I am not sure the service charge does go to the staff, whereas a tip would. The hotel is about 45 mins to 1 hr walk away from centre of Funchal depending on how quick you walk. We did it several times. Tourist tax payable on arrival 2 euros per person per night. Pool towels provided (which we only used once because of weather)and are in your room waiting on arrival which is a bonus. They also have non smoking area around the pool which in my opinion is wonderful. Quite a few restaurants and shops nearby plus a shopping mall on the main road. Plenty of buses/taxis to be caught nearby. I think if I went to Madeira again I would stay nearer to Funchal

This hotel is great for families, great service in and out of the building. The rooms are well organised and the staff are really friendly. If you are looking for a place to stay in Madeira, this is a great hotel to go to. Funchal's city centre is a bus journey away and the CR7 museum is on the route as well if you are a football fan. I would love to come to this hotel again when I come back. It is just all together a great facility. Thank you!
