New Hall Hotel & Spa, Birmingham

We had a really lovely stay overall; the hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful, with plenty of space to stroll and enjoy the scenery. We booked a leisure weekend break to make the most of the pool and spa facilities, but unfortunately the pool was a let down. It’s quite small, with only four loungers and two chairs inside. What should have been a calm, relaxing experience was far from it. A group of five women were talking very loudly, and another couple were also disruptive, the man repeatedly jumped and dived into the pool despite clear signage advising against it. It made it impossible to relax, and after about 20 minutes we decided to leave and sit outside instead, as the weather was nice. This was the biggest disappointment of our stay. On a more positive note, the restaurant staff were lovely and dinner in the evening was excellent. However, I did find it unusual that none of the side dishes were included in the DBB rate, especially as all mains required at least one side—this felt like something that should reasonably have been included.

The beautiful grounds & historic part of building

My wife and I were greeting warmly by Sarah on arrival, and shown to a beautiful room. This was a good start. However, upon exploring the hotel bar and seating area, the carpets were filthy and tables were not cleaned over. It was very obviously there was no supervising manager present, which was the case during our two night stay. There was no one giving direction or supervising the staff. The Spa was beautiful, clean and very well maintained. Highly recommend the treatments. We were aware of poor reviews with regard to the Hotel food before we travelled, and this was unfortunately our experience too. The food we ordered for our evening meal did not resemble what we got. It was cold and of poor quality, and way over priced for what we actually got. At breakfast we ordered hot food, but the Eggs Benedict with what was supposed to be 'Ham Hock' was awful. The Ham Hock was in fact processed slices of packet ham, which was not a representation of the menu description!! This hotel is in no danger of winning any food awards.
