The Merchant City Inn

Clean hotel, comfortable bed, helpful staff, ticked all the right boxes for me. Great central location and hidden away off the main roads so really quiet. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again or recommend.

My single room was very small but adequate for a one-night stay. It was cold when I first arrived, and didn't heat up much - was glad I took my hot water bottle with me. The noise from outside was irritating throughout the course of the night, but being in the centre of Glasgow I suppose that was unavoidable. There was no view from my window - it was blocked by a big bolted wooden door.

Bit run down. No toilet downstairs. Had to hand in room key when out of hotel. On return at 9pm had to wait 10 mins as no one manning reception. Reception area locked. Only realised on arrival that there is an extra cost for cooked breakfast.

Had good stay here, room was comfortable and large enough. Staff were friendly. Hotel location is excellent in the city centre. Slightly disappointing that there was an extra charge for breakfast, despite Expedia confirming Breakfast buffet included, this was only for cold continetal items. Hot food was extra. Neither hotel reception or Expedia explained that clearly. Didn't put me off, and would stay here again.

Overall it was a good stay. Had a strange interaction with a drunk receptionist as written below. No elevator. Decent location near the shopping district and bars/restaurants (many gay bars). They offered free continental breakfast and a hot breakfast for £3.00. We ate out every morning so cannot comment on the breakfast quality. Room was clean and basic. Beds were comfortable. Limited amenities - TV, hair dryer, kettle, single closet... no dressers for clothing. Was as to our expectation. Check in was pleasant and easy. Most of the receptionists were kind. You must hand in and collect your room key upon exit/entry. Around midnight on our last night we went in to collect our key and the one and only receptionist was noticeably drunk. He had trouble standing from the couch, had me collect my own key from behind the counter without checking ID, and said some brash/inappropriate comments to my wife. It made us feel a bit uncomfortable as he was in charge of the Inn's security. We reported it to the police and the two at reception in the morning who took it seriously. It left a sour taste in our mouth.

Just what we wanted for our one night stay, but would not recommend as a tourist stop. no wifi in room.

For the price the hotel was grand for being out and about in the city. Was disappointing that it didn’t have a bar or lounge area to sit and relax in especially when we had children with us. But beds were clean and there was warm water for us all to shower with so all was good

Excellent location, perfect for a short stay. Good breakfast.
