"Close to subway"

8.0

The hotel itself was very nice and well located for the subway station and the sites that most tourists want to see. About a 20-25 minute walk to the Hermitage. The staff however was disappointing. We stayed for 9 days and housekeeping did not change our bedding until we made a special request near the end of the stay. They say that the front desk speaks English but that is stretching the truth. We asked for extra pillows twice and twice got extra bathrobes. We asked for directions, once to Peterhof and once to Tsarskoe Selo and both times were given wrong information. Most of the staff does not understand how a SIM card works and we had a lot of frustration getting the proper plan for our stay. We did not rate the surroundings highly because of the poor condition of the sidewalks. It appears the city is working on them and this should improve over time.

"Fine hotel for St Petersburg five nights"

10.0

We were very pleased with our stay at Ambassador. After taking a 12 day river cruise from Moscow we then spent five days in St P with more time for museums, walking about and watching people on the Metro escalators. (It is on the escalators that one can experience the incredible diversity of the many "Russian" ethnic groups.) Hotel Ambassador was great in all respects, although we did not eat there so can't comment on that. The room was 6 times bigger than our river cruise cabin so perhaps we were easy to please on that aspect. Hotel service was excellent and things were promptly delivered to the room. One of us needed ice twice a day for soothing a foot injury and never had any problem ordering ice or hot water for morning tea. It was a great location for getting to many historic heart of the city locations and the Metro was easy to deal with. We walked a lot, ate at nearby restaurants, including Georgian, the Vodka Museum restaurant and a great Armenian place (Kilikia, within walking distance). There is a store called AM nearby with a large selection of wine and several sizable grocery stores - gone are the days of the empty shelves - now they have about 30 varieties of drinking water to choose from. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the city and at this hotel. As we rode the taxi to Pulvono for our flight home, we realized that there were many more Orthodox churches which we had not seen! We chose the shoulder season on purpose with none of the sea cruisers!

"Not the best location or staff"

6.0

The hotel's location isn't the best. It's about a 20 to 40 minute walk from all the tourist attractions (depending on where you want to go). The room was ok in size but not very clean and full of mosquitoes every day. It was very strange as we never opened the windows. I asked the concierge about going to the Hermitage Museum on monday and said it was a good idea when in reality it's closed on mondays (precisely the reason I asked!) All in all it was an "OK" experience but nothing more than that.

"St. Petersburg"

10.0

Just a very quick visit, but a lovely experience. It was beautifully decorated throughout, most welcoming and as good as any western 4 star hotel. Fantastically clean everywhere, linen was spotless. Room was lovely, beds very comfortable. Amazed that the towels were changed every day. Beautiful restaurant but 4 star prices so we couldn't afford breakfast etc The last night we did have dessert and coffee as a treat and it was just wonderful! The view from the 9th floor was superb. We didn't sample the swimming or health spa but it looked amazing. All staff were smart, helpful, kind, interested and determined that we had an enjoyable stay. A shining jewel in a slightly rough part of town!.We were very pleasantly surprised as we had heard that the star system doesn't quite match up to European standards - not true in this case. I will definitely recommend it to other people.
