Hanalei Colony Resort

Spent several days here with my brother and sister-in-law, and we had an absolutely fantastic experience. (I chose "friends" as our category because we're all adults, and most people look to the "family" category for kid-related reviews.) Our condo was spacious and clean, the single couch/bed in the second room was actually comfortable (!), the location is great for so many beautiful beaches and activities along the north shore, and the entire staff was very welcoming and kind. Loved having the beach nearby so we could roll out of bed and watch the sunrise. It was a perfect launchpad for adventures across the entire island. We can't wait to come back!

TLDR- The staff and experience were disappointing and if you want the best experience, stay at the one or in an Airbnb. I was so disappointed in the Hanalei colony resort. The location is incredible and has beautiful views, but our stay was ruined by the incessant construction. We received an email a couple days before our arrival saying there would be construction at the property. This was quite concerning for my party because we were planning a relaxing vacation (and would have booked a different hotel had we known), so we asked what that would mean for the guests. The resort reassured us that we would not notice it, meanwhile when we arrive, they are rebuilding the deck outside of our room. There was also construction happening throughout the grounds. For the first two days, we were woken up by construction, but ultimately decided to stick it out because we spent most of the day at the beach. For our last day, it was raining (as it does in North Kauai) and because the construction was so disruptive (imagine sitting next to a construction site), we decided to leave a day early. We brought these concerns up to the staff and they were completely unhelpful. In talking with the other guests, they had also brought up the concerns and nothing came of it. In the end, I wish I had booked another hotel or airbnb, and would recommend anyone who plans to visit Kauai do the same.

Aloha! We continue to return to Hanalei Colony Resort because there truly is something special about this place. The natural beauty, the peaceful setting, and the sense of privacy make it a perfect escape, our little slice of paradise. What makes our stay so memorable is the incredible staff. Autumn and Margaret go above and beyond to make guests feel welcomed and cared for, always offering assistance with kindness and aloha. Rhett, in particular, ensures the cats on the property are safe and happy, making sure they spend their days well and cared for. We also give lots of aloha to Leo, the orange cat, who has been a fixture at Hanalei Colony for 15+ years, we feel truly blessed to be able to spend time with him. We deeply love and respect all the animals on the property, including the monk seals that visit the beach. These endangered species are protected, and visitors should always know to contact the proper authorities if they see monk seals. It’s also important to remember not to take or move items from the island—learning and respecting these rules helps ensure Kaua‘i remains flourishing for future visitors. We also want to share that part of our stay was still at Hanalei Colony Resort, but booked through Kauai Kahuna Rentals, as our son generously arranged a special unit for our 10-year anniversary. Unfortunately, this experience was very disappointing. Unlike our direct booking with Hanalei Colony Resort, which always offers a warm welcome and attentive care, the Kahuna-managed unit showed a noticeable lack of attention. There was no greeting upon arrival, no card or any acknowledgment to show appreciation that we chose to stay with them. In addition, the unit had dirty towels, rusted, unusable beach chairs, and cockroaches in the kitchen. While we did reach out to Kauai Kahuna Rentals, they eventually responded by replacing the towels and setting cockroach traps, though their initial delays made resolving the situation difficult. The Hanalei Colony Resort team stepped in to assist only with the rusted beach chairs, providing new ones, which we truly appreciated. This experience highlighted the clear difference in service between a direct Hanalei Colony Resort booking and units managed by Kauai Kahuna Rentals. Despite these challenges, what continues to stand out is the genuine aloha spirit at Hanalei Colony Resort. A very special mahalo to Margaret, who has been an incredible asset to the resort. Her kindness, care, and willingness to help truly make a difference and are a big part of why we continue to return. Mahalo for the memories and until we meet again, a hui hou. 🌺

This is our second visit and we love it! If you’re looking to be entertain this place is not for you. A very relaxed and peaceful time on the north shore of Kauai with lots of things to see and do very close by. At first the seven or so one way bridges seems like an impediment. After you take a deep breath and relax, it’s one of the charms to life on the north shore. There is much to cause you to slow down and relax. Keith the driver of the shuttle is very helpful. He took us to dinner in town where we had a reservation, and suggested a time that he would return where we wouldn’t be rushed. As he picked us up he asked if we needed anything at the store before we went back to the resort. I love the bench down by the water. The perfect place to start out the morning with a cup of coffee and the rising sun.

The pool area was beautiful, and the views from the property are gorgeous. Even though our building was away from the sea, we seemed to have wonderful views from many places from the unit, such as the couch, the lanai, the desk and even the bed. Recent renovations are very nice and 2 bathrooms and a well stocked kitchen were fabulous for the two of us. Felt like this was a very close community area, and this resort seems to be a treasured part of that. This does not have the big, fancy resort feel, and that was refreshing. Although the buildings have the patina of time, the sizes and fresh decor of the interiors of the unit was appreciated. It is located very close to the end of the road and so it was easy to catch a shuttle to H'aena State Park.

Minor things that are probably going to be better soon are that the jets in the hot tub weren't working (important to some people), and the restaurant was in transition. Food was decent but you could not get a glass of wine or drink because their liquor license was not in place yet. This would not prohibit us from staying there again. The grounds are modest and dated generally but with that gorgeous sea view, fine pool area, updated interiors and good customer service, the positives out weigh the negatives, especially in this area of Kauai.
