Hanalei Colony Resort

Still a 10!!! This was our Fourth stay at Hanalei Colony and it could not have been better. This time we had a "Premier Ocean Front" room/suite and it was great. The ocean is no more than 50 feet away, and I cannot imagine anywhere on the islands. The sound of the surf, especially at night was incredible! We have been ALL OVER THE WORLD and this is our go to place.

Five star property that earns a three star review. Hanalei Colony Resort is an amazingly beautiful property in an amazingly beautiful location. So why my three star review: Their 10:00 AM non-negotiable check out time is an industry aberration and and insult to their paying guests. It screams out that they were glad to take your money but now just want you gone. If a Haole tries hard to pronounce place names correctly yet fails they shouldn't be corrected in a condescending voice. If you pay for three nights you should expect three coffee packets and not to be charged two stupid dollars for the second and third. Little things make all the difference. Here, Hanalei Colony Resort fails on the little things that could have resulted in a guest becoming a return guest but will not.

Loved staying in this condo/resort set-up. Our unit was a stone's throw from a gorgeous beach, stunning views, and an occasional Monk seal sighting. We enjoyed having a full kitchen and access to grills, a pool, and a jacuzzi. The Day Spa was right across the parking lot, which was a bonus. We also took advantage of the free shuttle that brought us to Tunnels beach, hiking at Hanea state park, and Hanalei town for meals. The HCR rooms have no TVs which helped us take advantage of the amenities and time together.

The unit is a little dated and the affects of moisture are apparent with some rust on hinges and lamps, but that didn't take away from our enjoyment. There was also a thick layer of dust on bathroom fan vents.

Excellent location with Mountain and Ocean views. Nicely maintained and easy to find.

The location was superb. View and accessibility to beach.

Stayed in B4 - 2nd/top floor. Lovely & spacious for group of 3. K-bed in main area (closed off by foldable doors). Day bed in a separate area of main room (close off with foldable doors) Son is 6”1 & he slept well. Each has own bathroom. No TV – quiet. Kitchen well equipped & comes with coffee/sugar & creamers. Position of balcony provided an amazing view of the ocean. No buildings or trees obstructing view. Some mentioned that it is worth the additional cost for an ocean front. We had a premium ocean view & somewhat disagree. There are a number units that provide amazing views that do not require the additional cost. Sure, nice to be ocean front, but not necessary. We had ocean front in Kona & it is a lot louder than one thinks. Being set back a little, provided for softer waves which felt more relaxing rather than overpowering. Unit came with a beach mat & 2 lawn chairs. Plenty of shampoo/conditioner/body lotion provided. No AC - not necessary at this time of the year with windows/balcony doors open & overhead fans. Restaurant closed at the time of our stay. There was a gallery/coffee shop open. Not sure if they provide muffins, etc as we never went in. Close to a number of beautiful beaches. Resort does offer free shuttle bus to Hanaiei Bay & other locations (we never used as rented a vehicle). Laundry available - $2.50 per wash & $2.00 per dryer. No detergent provided. You will need to ask the front desk for a code to the door located by the pool area. They will also provide you with coins if you do not have any. It is a secluded location, so food shopping is recommended as travelling back & forth is a little far away with lots of curves/twists in the roads. Also some road construction happening which can add to back-and-forth time. We covered a lot of the areas around this beautiful island & have to say that we felt that this was one of the better spots.

The only reason we are not giving our stay a 10/10 review was the check-in process. Unfortunately, we had an unpleasant encounter with a front-end staff member, Jeanne. She was incredibly unprofessional and rude, which included be yelled at and ranting while walking around the office – very bizarre behavior. There was also one male staff (not sure if he was the shuttle bus driver) who was also unprofessional. The matter was brought to the attention of the Supervisor, Chawake who handled it with the upmost professionalism. We were grateful to Chawake for taking the time to listen to our concerns and dealing with it in such a professional manner, including following up with us by email. She is definitely an asset to the resort.

The location and grounds are lovely, the unit was large and comfortable. The kitchen was well equipped.

The property is in serious need of maintenance. It is ocean front, so I understand that it is difficult, but it was actually pretty bad. Many things that could be fixed easily, Loose electrical sockets, lots of rust everywhere.

Good Pool, spacious room, view of the ocean

Very dated fixtures, appliances. The rusted top of the fridge was gross on first look, also had problems with the lock that wasted few hours of my day. The ocean is very rough and noisy at night at least in December when we were there, wish there were better windows that kept the night time noise down. Location also did not work for us. 15 mins drive for food might be desirable for many but not for us.
