Hanalei Colony Resort

We absolutely loved our stay at HCR!!! You can really feel the aloha spirit here with their unplugged mindset and being nestled between the beach and mountains. Not having AC might be a turnoff for some, but we loved feeling more connected to the outdoors this way and it never got too hot for us. It can be a bit of a drive to get to places, but taking in the scenery of the north shore is so worth it. The secluded area of HCR makes it so much more relaxing and peaceful. I couldn’t say enough good things about this place! Mahalo HCR for the most incredible few days we had there!!!

Loved it

I really wanted to love this place and have it as a place to return to. My first impression was good. It is in a beautiful location right on the ocean, although it is really not swimmable but there are other great beaches a few minutes drive away. The hotel is old but the decor feels updated and tasteful in a vintage Hawaiian way. The rooms felt spacious and had plenty of space for a family. The reason I won’t return is because we couldn’t sleep. The buildings are old and we were on the bottom floor so we heard all the noise in the room above us. I think there was a particularly loud person one night - he was up packing and moving things around the entire night and we heard it all. If it had been normal people sleeping, it might have been ok - although we still would have heard if they went to the bathroom at night. After that person left, we had a day of peace and quiet until the hotel sent in the cleaning person at 7 am on a Sunday. The staircase was right by our bedroom wall so we heard the cleaners go up and down over and over again and all the shuffling and walking and cleaning. The hotel has to know what it sounds like on the bottom floor in these old buildings. We couldn’t even complain to the front desk because they don’t open until 9 am on Sundays. We called the after hours desk and complained and eventually they stopped the cleaners but not until it had already ruined our morning. We never received an apology, just lots of excuses. I know we weren’t staying at a 5 star resort but I just consider the hospitality very poor and thoughtless.

Aloha! I have spent a lot of time in Hawaii over the last few years, and met my husband on Maui.! This was the only island I had not spent significant time on as of yet. I took a last-minute solo trip and HCR was the absolute perfect place to be. Buildings with only four units each spaced out over a large property with beautiful landscaping and a long stretch of secluded beach. Beds were comfortable, kitchen well stocked, great selection of quality beach equipment, and meticulously clean. Highly impressed with the cleaning and maintenance staff, friendly, and obviously take a lot of pride in their work and the property. Front desk staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. The shuttle is an excellent amenity, especially for a solo traveler. Even though I had a car, parking is limited at tunnels Beach and I didn’t have to drive back at night from town after dinner. there are three ceiling fans and they do a great job keeping the air moving in the unit. There are no TVs, however, I did sneak in a few shows in a movie or two on my iPad which was just fine. The pool has an adjacent garden area that is lovely and an awesome barbecue/outdoor kitchen. Laundry facilities are upstairs, however, there is an elevator. The front desk gives you coins and just will charge it to your credit card. Shout out to Margaret and Kawaki in the front office. Super accommodating when I decided to extend my stay, I felt treated like family, not a hotel guest. I stayed in a privately managed unit and then in a resort managed unit. They were both great. The special local touches such as Kawai, coffee and cookies in the resort managed unit fostered a real sense of place. The midday linen change was actually a full housekeeping, and it was a welcome treat. Thank you,Shauna! Shout out to Doug, the shuttle driver who helped me out immensely during my stay and always seemed genuinely happy to help. Several mornings, I enjoyed one of the most delicious coconut milk with lattes I’ve had at the coffee shop. Live music with a great singer, songwriter guitarist a few nights a week at the restaurant was a special experience, and Greg was super helpful with all of my food allergies for dinner. And, the best massage therapy in the entire island is right there across the parking lot. Hanalei Day spa is owned and run by a seasoned Ayurvedic expert, and her therapists are extremely knowledgeable and intuitively able to provide exactly what you need. I rely on bodywork to keep myself moving after I a spinal cord injury, and was grateful for Victor’s healing help. Being right between the mountains and the ocean, the air seems very heavily oxygenated and there is something undeniably, healthy, and regulating about this particular spot. The proximity to the most jaw-dropping scenery and natural wonders, snorkeling, beaches, gardens, and everything else you think of when you think of Kauai has insured that I will be returning, not only to the island, but definitely to Hanalei colony resort. It is at a great location, very close to amazing tunnels beach with a very convenient shuttle and beach gear are provided Very comfortable and large rooms. Would definitely stay here again and longer if I come back to Hawaii.

We have faced a couple of hours of construction noise during 2 days of our stay. They were very helpful when we raised our concern, but of course would be better not having this issue at all, not the best experience when you fly to hawaii from turkey to unplug.
