We recently (March) booked a private villa couples experience at Chi Spa at Shangri-La Mactan at approximately ₱28,000–₱30,000 expecting a truly premium, frictionless luxury wellness experience. While the property itself is visually beautiful and several aspects of the service were handled professionally, the actual massage experience did not deliver the level of emotional ease, professionalism, and hospitality expected at this price point. To be fair, the front lobby staff were welcoming and polished, the golf cart attendants transporting guests around the property were excellent, and one of the therapists remained calm, professional, and clearly attempted to smooth over the situation once it became uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the second therapist significantly disrupted the experience. From the beginning, her behavior felt socially aggressive, controlling, and unusually focused on hierarchy dynamics rather than hospitality. At one point, despite the fact that we had showered immediately before arriving at the spa, there appeared to be inappropriate scrutiny around cleanliness that felt deeply uncomfortable and unnecessary. The interaction became tense enough that another therapist privately intervened in Tagalog to calm the situation and redirect her behavior. When guests are paying nearly ₱30,000 for a private luxury spa experience, they are not paying only for architecture, robes, pools, or aesthetics. They are paying for emotional ease, professionalism, frictionless hospitality, and the ability to fully relax into the experience. Once a therapist becomes argumentative, socially aggressive, racially inappropriate, or controlling, the experience itself becomes contaminated. Additionally, during the synchronized couples treatment, the therapist left mid-service for several minutes, which resulted in uneven treatment timing and made the service feel poorly managed overall. At this tier of pricing, details matter. What ultimately made the experience disappointing is that several local spas in the area, at a fraction of the cost, have delivered more relaxing, more professional, and more emotionally coherent service experiences than what we received here. We genuinely wanted to love Chi Spa. The grounds are beautiful, the villa photographs beautifully, and portions of the team clearly understand luxury hospitality standards. However, luxury hospitality is not just visual curation. It is embodied through staff behavior, professionalism, atmosphere, and the guest’s ability to feel emotionally at ease throughout the experience. I sincerely hope additional training is provided because the actions of a single therapist ultimately overshadowed what should have been a memorable and restorative experience.

My wife and I spent ten days at the Shangri-La Mactan in January 2026, and we were thoroughly impressed. Having stayed in many deluxe hotels, we found this to be the most customer-focused property we have ever experienced. The staff didn't just meet expectations; they consistently exceeded them with a genuine cheerfulness that made us feel right at home. ​Seamless Arrival The positive experience began at the airport. We booked a private hotel car for our transfer, and the representative greeted us the moment we identified ourselves, whisking our luggage to a waiting vehicle. There was no fuss and no waiting. While it is more expensive than a local taxi, the efficiency and comfort made it well worth the cost. ​Exceptional Service & Warm Welcomes At the front desk, Guianne (I hope I have the spelling correct!) greeted us warmly and handled our check-in with great efficiency. She personally escorted us to our room to ensure we were comfortable and familiar with the amenities. We booked a Panoramic Ocean View room, and the view was spectacular—highly recommended for the extra cost. ​A particularly thoughtful touch: knowing it was my birthday month, the hotel surprised us with a birthday cake in our room. Because I am Celiac, we called to check if it was gluten-free. Though it wasn't, the staff apologized and immediately offered to prepare a gluten-free version. They even insisted my wife keep the original cake to enjoy, which was a lovely gesture. ​A Celiac Traveler’s Paradise The dining experience was truly exceptional. At every restaurant, the moment I mentioned my gluten-free requirement, the server’s immediate response was, "I will ask the chef to come out and speak with you." Every chef listened carefully and adapted almost any menu item to be safe for me. Chef Davide at Acqua and Chef Phillip at Cowrie Cove were particularly outstanding, offering to custom-prepare dishes based on the fresh ingredients they had in the kitchen. We felt so safe and well-cared for that we ate nearly every meal on-site. ​Activities & Grounds Despite some imperfect weather, the amenities were fantastic. I managed to snorkel almost every day at the vibrant coral reef located right in the hotel’s protected cove. The "huge" main pool is also gorgeous and perfect for swimming laps. ​Final Thoughts While the hotel is an established property and the rooms could benefit from some modern updating, the level of service is peerless. We would stay here every year if it weren't a 26-hour journey from home! We highly recommend the Shangri-La Mactan to anyone seeking a stress-free, high-end getaway

We had a wonderful stay at Shangri-La Mactan in Cebu; it’s a fantastic resort with extensive facilities and something for everyone. The gym is excellent, the yoga class in the pavilion was a great touch, and the beach area is beautiful. A real highlight was the massage at CHI, The Spa. While on the expensive side, it was absolutely worth it; the setting is tranquil and beautifully designed. Be sure to allow time to use the full facilities, including the steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and outdoor relaxation area; it really elevates the whole experience. There are plenty of dining options, and Cowrie Cove stood out in particular for its excellent food and cocktails. We also really enjoyed the cultural show; the dancing and costumes were vibrant and engaging, and it felt like a genuinely lovely introduction to the Philippines. The rooms are lovely, well-equipped and very comfortable, with a super bed, and the breakfast offering is fantastic with a wide selection that seems to vary daily. My only regret is not having more time there; it was a very enjoyable stay. One small area for improvement would be clearer communication on water conditions. My morning swim was cut short due to stinging jellyfish in the sea; not severe, but uncomfortable and potentially more of a concern for children. That said, the lifeguards were very helpful and quickly assisted with vinegar treatment. Overall, a great stay in a beautiful setting.
