"Exceptional"

10.0

It’s a spa resort with a shuttle to/from the station and the doorway. Great staff & services. Gorgeous views and an amazing breakfast buffet and top notch restaurant for other meals. The onsen was public and worth going. You’re there to relax unwind and enjoy the views and surroundings. Well that ticked every box. Lovely!!

"Still a good hotel but disappointing"

4.0

Overall, I think this property lower my expectations on Hyatt properties. Generally, Hyatt properties were able to “wow” me when I got there. This property surprised me, not offering upgrade, no early check in, no late check out, no globalist perks were offered. I had to “fight” to get early check in because I was really tired and felt like passing out. SPA was clean but boring, I think I’ll try to find other places to stay if I visit Hakone again.

"Extremely strong volcanic sulfur smell"

2.0

The breakfast food is good. The onsen experience is nice. It’s convenient to have a shuttle that can give you ride within a 5 minute radius and pick you up since it can be hard to find a taxi. The whole reason I give this hotel a 1 star is because of the smell. In the east wing of the hotel the volcanic sulfur smell is TERRIBLE, it’s the smell of rotten eggs. Our first night was absolutely horrible with the smell intensifying as the night progressed. I started feeling so sick from the smell, our young kids (5 & 6) kept waking up because of the smell. It was a miserable night for all of us. We requested a new room in the main building but all they could do was move us from the 2nd floor to the 4th floor and provided 2 air purifiers. This only helped a little. Extremely disappointing that the Hyatt doesn’t have a better way of managing the odor in the east wing, it’s not like our room was at a discounted rate. There are no disclosures to warn people booking this hotel that if you choose a western style room, you will suffer with a horrible smell while you stay in your room. A hotel employee told us the traditional Japanese rooms face the other direction and do not get the odor as much. I’m writing this review to help others planning their trip to Hakone since Hakone is beautiful but staying at the Hyatt was miserable and stinky for a lot of money.

"Loved the onsen experience"

10.0

The room and the onsen was top class. Loved the family room dining as well where we could relax with food and drink after onsen. All of the service was fast and gracious. Hotel room had a balcony with a massive mountain view. They anticipated all of usual needs and had already provided required amenities in the room.
