"Excellent value and service in a setting that has been neglected but is improving - recommended!"

8.0

Haughton Hall is definitely in need of a bit of refurbishment (which it looks like may be underway) but overall gives exceptional value for money if you aren't too worried about 1990s decor! The main part of the hotel is a pretty grand 18th century house, which has more recently been a children's home then a hotel. This history is reflected in additions to the building which are not as beautiful as the main frontage! There are extensive grounds, some of which are a bit wild, but with nicely kept bits that I imagine make a nice backdrop for any couples marrying or holding their reception here. There is also pub type seating outside the bar, with a large lawn beyond, great for children to run around while parents enjoy a drink. I was staying in the area at short notice for work, and the excellent price I got may have reflected the late availability, but I found Haughton Hall charging £10 less for bed and continental breakfast than the local premier inn was for room only. My room had a very comfortable double bed, a small working area and a separate area with a wardrobe leading to the en suite bathroom, which had a shower over a bath. The room had clearly been redecorated recently, with neutral design rather than the very retro style of the corridors leading There. Some of the furnishings (other than the bed) were quite cheap looking, but what can I say, the stay was inexpensive! It had everything I needed. The usual facilities were all there: toiletries, fluffy white towels, tea and coffee making stuff with nice biscuits and an iron and ironing board. I had seen a comment on another review saying the bar was expensive, but it being the hottest day of the year and a Friday evening I decided a pint was appropriate anyway. My pint of IPA was £6.50, which I thought was fine for a hotel, and served by a very welcoming bar man who made me feel comfortable sitting in the bar despite being a woman on my own. I arrived sceptical about the advertised leisure club given the price, but it was there, open to residents without additional charge and very well kept. The pool is a reasonable size for a hotel leisure club, there is a spa pool and sauna and a gym (which I didn't use, but could see a range of equipment. The changing rooms were clean. The inclusive breakfast is the continental, which was perfectly adequate for my needs, with toast, cereals fruit and a small selection of very nice pastries. Cooked breakfast was available for an additional £13.50. There was a wedding on while I was there, and I really appreciated the fact that the hotel emailed me to forewarn me. Also thoughtful was that on this very hot day they had left my room with blinds down and windows open. There was also a fan provided. Finally and best of all, the staff were outstanding. Both the receptionist that checked me in and the one that checked me out were friendly, professional and helpful. The bar staff and the leisure club staff were welcoming. The staff at breakfast managed that fine balance of being there when you needed them and unobtrusive when you didn't, and made sure that I had everything I needed. All in all, an excellent stay - thank you!

"Great value in slightly decayed grandeur!"

9.0

As other reviews have said, Haughton Hall needs further refurbishment. However, my stay really exceeded my expectations, and was incredible value for money. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful and went that little bit extra to make my stay the best it could be. The bed was comfy, the ensuite had a bath with shower over and lovely, fluffy towels and the leisure club was really well kept and featured a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and gym. A continental breakfast was included in the price and featured toast, cereals, yoghurt, fruit and pastries. The extensive grounds had some very pretty corners, and a large lawn. There was a wedding the night I was there, and the hotel was thoughtful enough to warn me of the possibility of noise. As a heavy sleeper, it didn't put me off on this lone work trip, but as the partner of a light sleeper I really appreciated the putting first of the customer by telling me. Lastly, on the hottest day on record the housekeeping staff had left my room with blinds down and windows open, so it was noticeably cooler than the corridors. Oh, and the main building itself is a beautiful 18th century grand house.

This didn't bother me at all, but the hotel is clearly part way though a gradual upgrade, and the corridors were dated and some of the windows in corridors not as clean as the rest of the hotel. The extensions to the building were slightly unsympathetic- I suspect put up in the 60s or 70s. And some of the furnishings in my room looked a bit cheap, but the all important bed and mattress were food quality and the room had everything you might need.

"Great potential for improvement"

6.0

Beautiful location in lovely surroundings, very quiet with plenty of parking space; the room we had was spacious and reasonably equipped. The pool area was a godsend in the heatwave and is a definite selling point. Breakfast was okay and included in the room price, which was incredibly reasonable. Some of the staff were very helpful and friendly.

The hotel is run down and unloved in many places and in need of care and attention, which may be reflected in the room price. They more than get this back with prices for food and drink, which was overpriced for what it was (£18 for one small and one large white wine from the Morrisons 2 bottles for £12 range), and whilst there were plenty of staff around it felt totally disorganised and chaotic. Once someone gets their arms around these issues, it will be a fantastic location.

Welcoming and professional staff Good leisure facilities Large, comfortable room with pleasant outlook

The food; there was a very limited evening menu and breakfast was disappointing, but the village, with a good choice of eating places, is within walking distance
