"Basic"

8.0

I think the hotel is really less than 3 stars. Staff very helpful. Chaotic way of doing breakfast--didn't make sense having to cook everyone's meal one by one. Basic room with hot shower. Good enough for night before going to the airport.

"Beautiful place and great location"

8.0

Just a short walk to downtown and in a lovely neighbourhood. Really friendly new owners that were very helpful. Would definitely recommend to others, especially if you're looking for someplace with some ambience. Set your own alarm though because the night manager slept through our wake up call. Whoops.

"I Hope to Return, Soon"

10.0

What a nice surprise happening upon this place. Friendly, accommodating staff. A nice little bar, a very good breakfast, laundry service. I don't know if they serve any other meals. I was out seeing San Jose. But, when I was there I felt more at home than in a hotel. It's an old building with a colorful history. If you don't like an occasional creaky floor of the minor quirks of an older building, think twice. But, you'll miss a nice experience.

"Great location and managers!!"

6.0

This is a cool little boutique hotel. Don't expect fancy at all. It's an older place that used to be a family mansion where Hemingway stayed, and then was divided up and part turned into a hotel. Deacon will tell you the whole story, which is a good one! Hotel was clean and the managers, Deacon and his fiance', are absolutely great people. The breakfast is very good. The location is ideal for walking to the various tourist spots - downtown market, museums, theater house, etc. Bank is about 1 block away. Don't go out after dark. May be safe, but people out and about are somewhat questionable. The room we had was in the front corner and really noisy with traffic. Try to get an inside room and not street-side.

"Not for me"

4.0

My reservation called for a balcony room with a city view. I was given a room with no balcony and no view. A demolition site occurring next door right outside of my limited view window was very noisy. I thought they would quit work at dinnertime. They did not. There was a worker working on the site all night long! The owner and staff claimed they could do nothing about it, but they could have done something about it if they had given me the balcony room I had reserved in the first place! This place is nicely decorated, but unfortunately that is about the only good thing I can say. My room had a 'useless' window placed high up on the wall, and the hallway lights shined brightly in my room all night long! Windows could not be closed. I told the owner of my dissatisfaction, and he told me that if I wished to leave in the morning he would personally refund my money for the second night. I met with him in the morning and he said he could not make a refund until he had received payment from Hotels.com, which he said would not come for a month or two. In our parting conversation he attempted to placate me by saying all Costa Rica hotels are like this, and that everyone who had stayed with him thought his place was the best. He then tried to sell me a book about Costa Rica written by his associate! I thought he was rather arrogant. I forgot any chance of a refund, I was not about to chase him around for a month or two.
