The Mill Hotel Sudbury

Visit this place occasionally in the hope that its improved but unfortunately not. This time was just for drinks and afternoon tea on the rooftop in the sun with a stunning view over the meadows. As always the almost perfect location is let down by the staff who seem ether uninterested and a little lazy or very attentive but not enough of them. Always piles of glasses on the tables and bar, takes an age to get a drink and the afternoon tea was an hour late. The other odd thing is shutting the rooftop bar at 9.00, which on a summers night would surely pull in more money than the hotel rooms that are apparently affected by the noise. Its the strangest of hotels, absolutely stunning location and nice bar area although slight whiff of wet dog and roof top but just served by kids who just don't seem engaged. If I was a manager for Surya hotels I would be looking at getting in a decent manager and paying ,more money for bar staff who want to work, what a wasted opportunity.

staff was slow and not very attentive or helpful outdoor area messy no room service no fridge in room also tried to contact prior to stay about late check out and fridge but no one got back to me and on arrival only could have an hour late check out an no option to have fridge also requested breakfast in room but told no room service so missed breakfast and being informed it was our wedding anniversary not helpful

Friendly lovely staff

I went to this hotel while on a coach holiday. On arrival we were met by the manager and one of the reception staff - the lovely Megan. After a bright, cheery welcome we were shown to the dining room where we were served tea and cakes. My room was in the annexe and was a bit tired but perfectly functional. I didn't have a view but I did have a VERY comfortable bed and the room was spotlessly clean. A big shout out to the cleaning lady ( unfortunately I didn't catch her name) who was friendly and cheerful. The location of the hotel could not be bettered. It is next to beautiful water meadows which are unchanged since Gainsborough's day. The food at the hotel was very good - the Tempura prawns being particularly tasty. The restaurant staff were all very pleasant and efficient. I enjoyed the breakfasts especially the sausages! I loved my stay and would definitely return. One curiosity is the mummified cat in reception. I saw another mummified cat in Bury St Edmunds so it's a Suffolk custom.

The actual hotel itself was clean and welcoming on arrival - bar was lovely and ambiance of property was good with lovely location next to the river and beautiful outlook!

Dated rooms although clean we found our shower was not in the best condition with mould and orange sealant. Breakfast which was served buffet style was not appetising to look at. The pastries were open to air and there were flies buzzing around. Coffee served in pump dispensers should not be used and sadly I found that my coffee was tepid.
