I really enjoyed my stay. In fact before I checked out I booked 3 more nights when I had to come back a week later. Definitely felt like I got my money's worth.
This place is okay if you plan to stay for 2 nights at most. Price wise it could be lower. If you plan to catch a good sleep, skip this place, pillows and mattress are not good. On the good side, location is great, close to everything.
I chose this hotel because of its convenient location (a couple minutes walk from the central station). Like any other intercity hotels, it's of no frill minimal type, and for this one, even without a kettle. The hotel staff was great though, check in was fast, allowed me for late check out, kept my bag after I checked out and allowed me to leave my phone charging in their office. Comfortable shower. Safe to lock up the valuables. I echo the comments from another reviewer, that the free wifi option is pretty much useless, it IS a dial up speed and a lot of apps just won't load because it's way too slow. I ended up using my mobile data. I think the hotel really needs to think about their offering. I have stayed in many Steingenberger hotels including intercity in other countries, none had any issue with free WiFi speed. For the convenient location and price, this is your option. But it could be better.
Clearly recently modernised, this hotel is very convenient for the station in Essen and comes with clean and comfortable rooms. This is a good choice for a short business stay of a few days or a weekend to go exploring and shopping in the area. Good breakfast in the restaurant. The only negative is the provision of internet connectivity: a dial-up speed free option or an E8 broadband version. There would less stress to customers if they simply added the price to the room and made it free!
an average experience
I was checked in by a very rude women (by German standards) and feared for my stay, but all the other staff I dealt with afterwards were polite and efficient. The lobby and room were very clean, the bathroom/shower excellent, and the bed fine (I had no problem sleeping). My room fronted onto a busy road, which had the main train line on the other side. It was reasonably soundproofed, but if you like an open window it was noisy (this didn't bother me). On the flip side, it is 5 minutes from the main station/metro, and the town centre shopping/bars area. Only other slight issue was the TV - old and with no English channels. I don't expect many, but one news channel at least should be available (there were French, Spanish etc).

This was my first time to be Essen. I had a feeling of peace and home. I could easily find restaurants and shops for my leisure time. I chose to stay at InterCityHotel because I needed to travel another city every day and the station was nearby.
The hotel isOK and as expected. It was extremely expensive but during the exhibition that is unfortunately expected. My problem is hat when being completely ripped off on the price they still try to squeeze even more out of you for a useable WiFi broadband. There is a complimentary WiFi but it is so slow it is almost unuseable. At 240 euro per night they should really offer a better service than that
If you need a good, modern, clean and efficient hotel In Essen, this is one of them. Everything works. Check out the position to where you want to be as it is not that close to Messe or the centre.
