Cathedral Quarter Hotel - Derby

The fact that this is a four-star hotel is laughable. The decor is dated, rooms are tiny, beds uncomfortable, feels unclean, everything needs a complete refresh. We feel completely cat-fished by the images online. This is a 2-star for us! Premier Inn would be cheaper and cleaner.

A friend and I enjoyed a tasty vegetarian breakfast in this lovely historic building, part of the boutique Cathedral Quarter Hotel. The service was excellent, with welcoming and helpful staff, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. The surroundings were very pleasant, making it a thoroughly enjoyable breakfast experience.

For a quick overnight stay, this was a great choice. The staff were helpful and the room was clean, warm, and well supplied with water bottles, toiletries, tea etc. The building has tons of character - there was also minimal road noise. Only pointer would be all the coffee in the room was decaf! Doesn't quite hit the spot after a work Xmas party...

We stayed overnight at this very nice hotel November 2025. We found it easily and it really is situated great for proximity to Derby city centre. The entrance is impressive and you’re treated by a sweeping staircase, stained glass and lots of panelled wood fixtures reminiscent of a bygone age. There’s the scent of a national trust property in the air too so you know this building has some age and character. It was a former police station and then council offices so well looked after. Reception and check in was very good. And we were directed to free parking spaces out front which are for hotel guest use only. Not many spaces but perfect for our arrival. You also get a % off if you need to park in the ParkSafe car park in the road adjacent. We were put in room 28 on the second floor at the back of the hotel. Room was good with en-suite shower room/ toilet. Bed was large, tea coffee making facilities, tv, wardrobe, iron and board, fan and oil filled radiator but there is aircon and heating in the room. Beds were ok comfort wise. My only gripe was despite the secondary glazing the windows were very drafty. Now I know they’d put very heavy curtains up at the windows to combat this and put extra heating in the room so I guess these old buildings can’t be perfect so this was only a small thing to us but the curtains needed to be fully closed to ensure no drafts. We paid £12 each extra for breakfast which included a cooked course and continental, toast, preserves, yogurt and orange juice etc. you get a menu and choose your cooked option from that. We chose the ‘Opulence Breakfast’ expecting well an opulent breakfast. We didn’t have any of the continental course in anticipation of this said ‘opulence breakfast’ being quite large. But also although the ingredients were great quality we got two eggs, one rasher bacon, two small sausage, cooked tomato, mushrooms, beans, and a hash brown. It was hardly opulent (see my pic) so bear this in mind. It was very tasty however and we filled up on toast to have along with it. We waited a long time for it to be served and the dining room we felt was too small for the amount of guests. Some people were borrowing chairs from other tables in order to sit together and believe some went into the bar as an overspill. That aside we would definitely stay here again. It was a very nice hotel, staff nice and friendly, great proximity to city centre and it’s a really lovely building in the Cathedral quarter right next to the Cathedral funnily enough! We loved Derby and would like to come back again. We were down for a concert in the Vaillant Live venue close by. Which was very new and a great place to see a live band like the Levellers. We enjoyed it thoroughly!

We were staying in Derby for one night and wanted somewhere close to the cerntre, at a good price. The Cathedral Quarter Hotel ticked the boxes, being the cheapest city centre hotel, with breakfast included too. The hotel really exceeded expectations. It’s a beautiful place inside with lots of period character. Our room wasn’t the biggest double room I’ve ever had but it was comfortable and clean and we didn’t need anything more. The staff were all really friendly and breakfast was lovely, with a good choice on offer. Parking outside is fairly limited but we found a space on the street no problem and charges don’t apply at night time. Would definitely stay here again.

We were attracted by the appearance of the property on Expedia and the reasonable price. But when we arrived, after check-in time, the person at the desk disappeared for several minutes to find out if the room was ready. We reached the room and were disappointed. It was tiny, with no space to put a suitcase down except on the bed. Thus it was too small to be a single, never mind a double. The bathroom was clean and pleasant, but there were chipped tiles. More importantly, the safe didn't work, which I reported, but the person at the desk said that nothing could be done as they didn't have the master key. Did this mean it would not work in perpetuity? The lobby area and staircase were very elegant, but a bit dark and exceedingly quiet. Overall, a handsome building, but a very disappointing room.

Easy to find managed to park on premises but there are not many parking spaces. Theres plenty of off street parking. Hotel is clean and staff friendly.

A beautiful building in a prime location. It is dirty, badly managed and suffers from under investment. It is not a 4 Star hotel. Stay in the Premier Inn.

Stayed here for two nights with my family. Very refreshing and serene atmosphere. Rooms were cozy and perfect for relaxing. We specially enjoyed the food, especially the Sri Lankan dinner which was flavourful and a wonderful surprise. Buddhika and the team were very professional, attentive and always checking in to make sure we were comfortable. It's a charming place with great food and a lovely team who made it feel like a home away from home. Will definitely come back and recommend this place

Staff helpful and friendly. Bed was comfortable, room was clean. Could do with a bit of updating but overall decent value for money.
