Holiday Inn Brussels Schuman by IHG

The young man at reception was nice enough to let us check in several hours early, however he didn’t actually check us in!! So at 10 pm someone tried to get into our room, they had a key and was able to open our door (lucky we had the lock bar on). When we went down to reception to see why this happened we just were told that their computer said we never arrived. We didn’t get an apology or any other sort of compensation. I get it mistakes happen, but a sorry would have been nice. I also opted to pay for breakfast at the hotel as we had an early flight and were tired, again the young man on reception was kind enough to book this for us, and again, there’s a downside! Because of the language barrier I couldn’t quite understand what he said, and we were charged €42 for a simple breakfast. He handed us the receipt and that was all, we later found out he charged a fee on top of the normal breakfast, which was not reflected in the receipt given. We had already paid €50 for the room, and an additional €42 for an unknown fee/breakfast. My advice to anyone checking in is to know French or make sure you ask enough questions. We weren’t given any clarity and it made the stay quite uncomfortable and scary, but truly what made our stay the worst was not a single staff member talked to us about their mistakes or apologised.

The only positive item for the hotel is the breakfast. The rooms are very noisy and very basic. The staff was nice, but every time I stay there they have some confusion (with the room, with the payment, etc). The last time they double charged me and I needed 6 months to have my money back. To avoid.

We had an overall great experience here with just a few bobbles. The hotel is in a residential/office area and it was nice to not have the craze of the tourist areas - it was only about a 5 min walk from the Schuman metro station (and the metro in Brussels is great - very easy to use especially since it is a smaller city - be sure to find out how to get the metro card for multiple trips and NOT the XL option which you will pay more per trip). The streets are quite empty at night though we did feel safe. There is not a lot around the area besides a small amount of cafes, a grocery store and bakery - all of which seemed to close early though we were there for the New Years Eve weekend which may have been a factor. The common area was a great place to gather with a lot of seating and a pool table. We enjoyed the happy hour and a pizza all of which was good. There is a small outdoor courtyard. The breakfast was amazing with a lot of choices. The main issue we had was that we returned late on New Years Eve. The exterior door was locked and our room keys would not work on the scanner. There was a sign that indicated we should ring the bell but after ringing it for a minute or so, no one came to the door. We were outside in an empty street with our 2 teenagers. We did not feel unsafe per se, but it was uneasy to not be able to get in. Within a few minutes the night desk staff returned to the front of the lobby and we were waving at the window. Apparently the bell was broken or the staff person did not hear it. The staff person was a bit defensive when we said that the bell was not working. We were asked about our experience at the end we didn't feel that the issue was enough to complain about it on its own, but because we were asked by a manager, we did share the issue with doorbell. As a result, we were given a discount which was not expected but was nice of them. The room was spacious and the bathroom was large enough for our family of 4 to share and the towels were softer than some other IHG hotels we have been in. The beds were comfortable and service overall was great. Definitely recommend those who want a quieter, low key hotel experience. Plus the bakery around the corner was amazing!

Whether you want to go on long walks, use the metro, or use the train system, the Schuman area is a great location to access many things. I did not know this when booking the hotel, and the location became an extra benefit. The staff was very kind and helpful, especially Jad. The room was quiet, and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfast was AMAZING. The variety and quality were excellent. When I return to Brussels, this will be where I will stay again.

The hotel has a great location in the EU quarter. The metro and train station, restaurants and shops are near-by. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are nice and clean, the bed is comfy. Unfortunately, the rooms are not soundproofed so you can hear the person in the next room making a phone call or using the bathroom. You can also hear everyone in the hallway and the noise from the street. Another downside is that they only have one very slow elevator in the hotel so if you stay on the upper floors, it will take a while to get downstairs.

The late check in service was excellent. The receptionist was very friendly and professional, even as our arrival time was at 1:30 am. Room is comfortable, breakfast was good.
