Schoone Oordt Country House

Spent an overnight here on our way to the Garden Route. It was just intended to provide a respite from driving, but turned into a great experience. The grounds are splendid and provide a splendid refuge of calm after a busy day. The meals are fantastic and the owner and staff all made us feel really welcome. Took a trip to Bontebok National Park and that is well worth a visit too when you are in the Swellendam area.

Swellendam is a gorgeous little town and Schoone Oordt Country House is a gem of a retreat after a long trip. I really wish that our itinerary allowed us to stay for 2 nights. If anyone doing the garden route is unsure about how long to stay, either travelling from Plett direction or from CT direction, you really should consider 2 nights rather than 1. The conservatory restaurant was phenomenally food, wine expertly advised and vegetarian catered for no problem at all (mushroom risotto was 10/10). Breakfast was a real treat. My first time experiencing courses for breakfast! The rooms are gorgeous, the staff so welcoming and friendly. Thanks Alison, Charlie, Carel and everyone else at Schoone Oordt.

We had a one night stay here whilst on route. The guest house is located at the end of the old town, great location. Set in its own private grounds with a swimming pool and fish pond with a difference!! We were welcomed by the staff and offered scones and jam as part of the check in, lovely touch. We stayed in the family cottage - very spacious with its own roof patio. Lovely roof, amazing bed - best night sleep in years!! We booked in for tgr evening meal - first class and a lovely setting in the conservatory. Next day - breakfast time, 3 course breakfast with choices - again lovely and please allow time to enjoy. The guest house has private secure parking. I must highlight the great hospitality across their whole team - the owner Alison is a true character who clearly loves welcoming everyone - thank you. Good WiFi available. Little gem tugged away - if you passing don’t miss this one

My wife and I stayed here as part of an 8 day driving journey from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town via the Garden Route. Unfortunately our itinerary only allowed for a single nights stay. We wish we had stayed here longer and here's why. On arrival we were greeted by several friendly staff, who were all very welcoming. We were supplied with complimentary scones, butter, cream and jam, and offered some tea, although as it was so hot we chose cold drinks. The homemade scones were amazing. We stayed in the family cottage which was in the grounds a few yards away from the main building. Everything was just perfect - the attention to detail with the little things was wonderful. The cottage was clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. There was also additional facilities, including a sink, a microwave, and a fridge containing water and fresh milk for the tea and coffee provided. The grounds were immaculate and we found it very comfortable relaxing on the spaced out loungers around the pool. Whilst we didn't eat dinner at the restaurant (due to having over eaten for the previous 2+weeks :-) ) the menu did look amazing and if the massive 3 course breakfast is anything to go by, then I'm sure we wouldn't have been disappointed. The quality and quantity of the breakfast was exceptional! This was our first time in SA and when we return again we will 100% be staying for longer at this wonderful accommodation, so that we can make proper use of all the facilities - the bar, the restaurant, the gardens and the pool. Alison, the owner was charming and made us feel very welcome in her home. Can't wait to revisit.

Beautiful traditional old country house perfectly maintained in a lovely garden . Great restaurant for dinner with good food and wines from local winery’s and very good breakfast . Very friendly and kind staff.

We were in the honeymoon suite. Beautiful and spacious room but too dark for my personal preference .

What a unique and lovely place this is ! The staff are all super helpful and friendly. The room and facilities were excellent and we would certainly return. Minor things which we find when travelling are things like cafetieres ot pod machines, which we never use don't have instructions with them. Is it one spoon or five ? We should have asked and also about breakfast which was lovely but lacked our sort of choice. We tend to keep it simple, cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt etc. It would save any waste and we would enjoy it more. All in all, it's a lovely place to stay and would return if here again

On arrival at Schoone Oordt we were warmly welcomed by Joany who showed us to our bedroom and made sure we were comfortable. Throughout our two nights stay we were treated courteously by all the staff, particularly Joany and michelle. Dinner on both evenings was fine dining at its best and the breakfasts were amazing - on both mornings the menu was different. A suggestion for safety would be to have handrails installed on stairways that have more than two steps. Finally thank you Schoone Oordt for making us feel special and cared for - a getaway again in the future!

From start to finish this was the best night we spent in South Africa. We arrived around 1pm and were met by the lovely staff who provided tea, coffee and scones while we filled in the online registration. There was a team of people to help with bags and getting us settled into the room. We made a reservation for dinner in the restaurant and headed out to Bontebok National Park, a short drive away for a lovely walk and drive. On returning we were able to make tea and coffee in the room and had a chilled hour or so in the very comfortable and clear room. We headed to the bar for a drink before dinner - a good selection of local, interesting gins - and then had the most delicious meal. During dinner we were asked if we would like the fire lit in our room as it might be a bit chilly later. Although we would have been comfortable enough, we loved the fire when we returned to our room and this along with a very comfortable bed led to a great night's sleep. The following morning, after a lovely walk round the gardens, we had one of the best breakfast experiences, lovingly prepared and served by very proud and helpful staff. When we checked out we had a lovely chat with Alison and found out a bit more about the history of Schoone Ooordt and how much effoprt they and their staff have put into this wonderful place for over 20 years. We very much look forward to returning in the future.
