AC was broken and when they came to fix it they set it to 25C and it was hot in the room the entire time. Water presser and temp would not stay constant (Hot then Cold) bed was conferable if I was not hot. But for the price and one night it did the job.

How does one select a hotel in an unknown city? If money isn't an option, no problem. Otherwise, there's a lot of trepidation. Hotel Monaco was a good choice. We followed the advice of other reviewers and upgraded to a suite in the back - super quiet. The location is actually very good. it's an easy ten minute walk (go down to the Caballito and cross Reforma on Juarez) to the Alameda, there are three Metrobus lines and two Metros. It was ideal for Ciclovia on Sunday. We didn't explore the adjacent Buenavista neighborhood, which has some notable sights but also seemed more working class than Centro. For those who recoiled at the state of the Hidalgo metro - yeah, sorta gross in places, but is New York or Chicago any different? Streetwalkers, homeless, yes, but this was everywhere as well. The Prostitutes seemed much busier closer to the Monument to the Revolution, where there are many other small hotels. There's lots of street life everywhere in CDMX. I'll echo another reviewer who said Hotel Monaco is clean, modern, and safe, and it came in under $US 50 a night. The restaurant is nothing special, but the staff is kind. One of the waiters while we were there grew up in Georgia. He lent us his Metro Tarjete, which was almost impossible to buy anywhere (check the Minas bus stop on Guerrero). We didn't explore the adjacent Buenavista neighborhood. The only mark downs here was that the hotel is a bit anti-septic. Think Comfort Inn without the carpet.

Located near but not in historical center. Easy access to all transportation services. Nice restaurant. Some reviewers have commented about insecurity about the neighborhood. Yes, there are numerous prostitutes out from late afternoon on, but live and let live and no problem. They do not approach the hotel. I felt perfectly safe walking around the meighborhood by day and always left and returned directly to the hotel entrance by taxi at night. I spoke Spanish with the staff, but I assume some speak English because there were other Americans staying here. This is a very nice small hotel for less than $50 per night.

Employees were very helpful and nice. I just wish they gave us more toilet paper. Rooms felt stuffy and hot. Beds were very hard.
