Adequate affordable accommodation but shop around. It’s not for you if you want a new corporate sterile box or a ‘boutique’ hotel with OTT crazy décor. A classic hotel, slightly faded around the edges. If you are used to historic buildings and their quirks, you will be okay with this. Quirks include a slow manual door elevator and a tiny lavatory in a cupboard. Good bed and bedding – had a good night’s sleep although the shutters didn’t block out all the light. It’s clean. The location is the Tenderloin district but as they advise if you arrive and leave via Geary Street it’s fine. (There are groups of unhoused people in lower Jones Street.) They charge a security deposit.

"Superb service"

Had a great stay here earlier this month, Randy was fantastic on reception for general info and in helping retrieve a lost item I had left in a previous hotel. The hotel is in a great central location, near everything and only a few mins walk from the famous cablecars.

It's never a good sign when multiple hotel staff tell you, unprompted, that it's unsafe around the area. No A/C, no heat, no amenities in the room and the topper, a random $250 "fee" which you have to contact your credit card company to get back. It was loud with motorcycles, sirens and music playing making it hard to sleep. Multiple homeless in the area with tents and you can't get into the hotel unless someone unlocks the gate. Spend a little extra and stay in a nicer area. Expedia should remove this property from it's offerings. The lower cost per night is lost with the extra $250 fee. Stay away, stay far away

This hotel was amazingly quiet and the hosts are very attentive. It has been years since my last visit to San Francisco and the homeless population is completely out of hand with half a dozen per block in this part of town. Only a few are clearly mentally ill, but it certainly gives a solitary female traveler pause. The hotel is secure with a locked front gate, but the city really needs a better plan.

The staff at the Layne were very friendly and helpful at all times. It is positioned close to Union Square so you can access many of the tourist features without problem. It is also close to theatres and some great restaurants. One tip - request a room at the back of the property as Jones Street can be very noisy.
